Antique gold jewellery has a special charm all of its own, from its history as treasured, precious keepsakes and family heirlooms, perhaps worn only on special occasions and also its status as a secure store of wealth passed down from generation to generation. I bought these two gold sovereign brooches some years ago for my retirement collection, each one a unique relic of bygone days, individually handcrafted by a skilled jeweller.
The two full sovereigns are solid 22 carat gold, each with a mint weight of 7.9881 grams and depict St George slaying a dragon, engraved by Benedetto Pistrucci, whose initials "B.P." are incorporated into the design alongside the year. The 1910 King Edward VII sovereign bears a "P" mintmark, designating a product of the Perth Mint. As there is no mintmark on the 1911 King George V sovereign, it would have been produced by the Royal Mint in London.
Both mounts include a gold safety chain and pin, and are hallmarked 9 carat gold, however the 1910 mount has a steel fastening pin, whereas the 1911 mount is all gold. The 1911 mount also has a personalised engraving - "Ida Weaver 1928" - on the underside of the bar.
I've tried to take well-lit, detailed photos, so you can evaluate the appearance and condition of the two sovereign brooches for yourself. Each piece will be supplied in a dark blue velveteen, drawstring presentation pouch, as pictured.
The price for the 1910 King Edward VII sovereign brooch (total weight 10.08 grams), is $575.
The price for the 1911 King George V sovereign brooch (total weight 10.47 grams), is $590.
Both prices include insured postage to anywhere in Australia and are payable by direct deposit/electronic transfer. All inquiries by forum private message or email, please.
