Anyone know what this is ?

This rock does not have any characteristics of a meteorite. It is definitely not a nickel-iron meteorite. It looks more like magnetite or hematite. It is a terrestrial rock. Sorry the news isn't more interesting.

    Anyone found a possible meteorite?

Post a (clear and focussed) photo to Australian Meteor Reports group on Facebook and we'll try to ID it for you. But don't post the state you found it in. We can usually tell right away if a rock is a meteorite or not. There are heaps of terrestrial and man-made rocks (like slag) that make...

    Meteorite Ch.7 Sunrise

Grub, I have been involved in a few of the Curtin and Monash meteorite hunts. Curtin's Desert Fireball Network cameras have led to the recovery of two meteorites from observed falls so far, and their success will only increase as they install more cameras. Nothing to report from my media...

    Meteorite Ch.7 Sunrise

Guy please don't ever use the term UFO. My contacts at the ABC are about to run with this story in the hope Sunrise will respond. Talking UFO's takes the science away from the observation and turns it into a rediculous nutjob conspiracy-fest. Here's an example of a recent event where a person...

    Meteorite Ch.7 Sunrise

Well 3D based on your story I certainly can't fault what you have done. My post querying this event on the Sunrise FB page has been deleted, which is strange in itself. Talking about UFO's will just confuse an already difficult topic though, because when someone mentions UFO's everyone thinks...

    Meteorite Ch.7 Sunrise

Hey listen if I'm wrong about this vid I'll be the first to admit it. But not only have I seen a lot of very bright fireballs myself, I've been investigating almost every meteorite fall and piece of man-made space junk over eastern Australia for the last 5 years. There's really no way I could...

    Meteorite Ch.7 Sunrise

I don't know who made it up, but it's been made up. 3DDevil you've recorded this onto your mobile, but what is the source of the original video? Was it a recording of the live Sunrise Tv program, or did you source the video from somewhere else? Also what is the remaining context of the video...

    Meteorite Ch.7 Sunrise

Don't get too excited guys. This looks totally faked. A daylight meteor this big would have been seen by thousands of people, produced a massive sonic shockwave, and would have been noticed by all the crew and producers of the show. There has been absolutely NOTHING about this meteor on social...

    Meteorite last night

Media are reporting it hit...it didn't...it splashed, landed in the ocean. The boom heard shortly after people witnessed the meteor was a sonic boom as the meteoroid penetrated the atmosphere at about 60km Altitude. This meteor event would have been an excellent candidate to recover meteorites...

help what are these 2 items Gold an meteorite

There's no known impact craters in that area, but there is lots of old volcanic activity, which I'm sure you're already aware of seeing as you are hunting for gold there. Still looks like impactite, but given the young geology of the region, any traces of old impacts would have been wiped away...

help what are these 2 items Gold an meteorite

Len, actually this could be just the beginning. I'm not interested in your gold, but I'd love to know where you found the impactite. I don't need to know an exact location, but a nearby town would help to determine if it is related to a known impact event or if there is an unknown crater out...

help what are these 2 items Gold an meteorite

That's very interesting. Definitely not a meteorite. It almost looks volcanic, but I'm assuming you've already ruled that out. You found it by detector right? So is it attracted to a magnet? I'm definitely thinking impactite now based on your new images, but then I'm no expert. Here's an...

help what are these 2 items Gold an meteorite

I've encountered rocks similar to the second one in central QLD. It was non-magnetic, but looked like it had been molten once. The visual assessment by several geologists was that it was desert varnish that gave it the smooth appearance, however it also had several flat surfaces that, again...

I will show You My Meteorite, if you show me yours ~!"

It is thought that the Shirahagi & Saotome meteorites might be part of the same fall, even though there is 40km between the two finds. This area is located around the city of Toyama. I think a large part of the 23kg mass from Shirahagi was used to make some famous swords, with the remaining...

    Meteorite

It looks like a big hunk of iron, but whether it's a nickel/iron meteorite or not needs more information and photos than what has been provided. There appears to be no fusion crust on the outside. In fact the fusion crust appears to be replaced with some type of casting agent. The shape is not...

hematite, magnetite iron rock or meteorite?

Now that I've been able to look at this on my computer (rather than my phone), I have to agree with the comments above. The surface of the rock is far too rough. And those small bubbles look volcanic in origin. You won't get bubbles on the outside of a meteorite. Even when highly weathered...

hematite, magnetite iron rock or meteorite?

This looks like a very good candidate for a meteorite, although a detailed photo of the cut edge may provide better clues. Fresh meteorites will have a black outer crust. This one looks like to have a highly weathered crust, but you would expect this in an environment like Sofala. I have a...
