Lightning Ridge/Grawin NSW information and questions

Hey everyone! Just thought I would make a quick post to see if anyone would be kind enough to share some advice in regards to this area. From what I can see the mine dumps at Grawin seem to be the pick and it looks like most people find at least something when they give it a visit. In...

    Araluen/Tarana amethyst?

My interest has recently been sparked by some amethyst finds other people have been having recently although I have no idea where they came from. Only thing I know is that its not terribly far from Sydney (4hours max). After looking around online I can see that both of these locations have...

    any idea what these are

Because zircons are quite heavy and you find them in your pan I'd be inclined to say that's what they are. If you find some decent ones they cut very nicely :D

    Sapphire Bend, Oberon NSW

If the clay is frozen you could check out porters Retreat which is just down the road and dig in the creek. A lot more gravelly in the creek bed and has stones to offer if you can brave the water. Hopefully the creek itself isn't frozen

    Porters Retreat & Grabben Gullen

I've never really seen much success come from the ancient wash layers at Porter's Retreat. I tried digging it the last three times I was there and the sapphires are in very small quantities, comparably the same as sapphire bend I'd say. However I myself have had relative success digging in the...

Porters Retreat and the Campbells river definitely hold gold and they're both about 15minutes away from the vulcan state forest. They didn't show a lot of colour for the test pans I did but it's there.

If I were to go back soon I'd definitely try mushroom picking, the forests are absolutely full of them right now. Lots of fly agarics around too... poisonous but very aesthetic :D

Pretty sure there's a website on the Campbell's river campsite, give it a good ol' google search :P there is also the campsite in black springs near the Vulcan state forest, not sure if either of them have specific rules.

    Oberon area

Had about five hours to look around today. Focused around the Vulcan state forest but didn't have a whole lot of luck... few chips and quartz crystals. Went to Campbell's river for about 15minutes, the shale exposed right next to the road would reveal a couple flakes of gold and several garnets...

    Oberon area

Invested in a fossicking permit for the state forests just in case I get hassled by some ranger :8 going to be down there for the next few days so I'll let you guys know how it went after I'm done. Pretty much just plan to check out all the local spots and see which one is more productive for...

    Tuena creek cinnabar?

I still am unsure about what it exactly is, lots of mixed feedback from people and small scale tests that I have done. I'd still be inclined to say its cinnabar but without any proper tests there's no way to know for sure unfortunately.

    Oberon area

I'm heading back to the area in the not so distant future and plan to do some test sieving in a few areas, thank you very much for your suggestion Magoo. I'll definitely have to give this area a look and I'll let you know how it goes. As a side note for anyone wanting to visit Porter's Retreat...

    Oberon area

Just wondering if anyone has had any luck chasing sapphires around there recently. I was at porters retreat today because in the past it's produced some nice stones but since then and now it seems to be pretty cleaned out, few zircons and a tiny sapphire chip. Only thing that gives me hope for...

    Minerama 2017

I'm very happy to hear you're keeping it as is :D it was a ripper of a stone that's for sure. The tour guide seemed to agree with me about it being a beryl crystal but without a sg test there's no way to know I guess. Did pick up a few little pieces of topaz but at best they 'might' be worth...

    Minerama 2017

It was an interesting experience being recognised by a few people that's for sure :P I assume you'll have a good chance of being there again next year Lonewolf so maybe then our paths will connect. I think it's pretty funny though that my best stones came out of the four wash bags I brought...

    Minerama 2017

Yeah same. Information centre ran out so went there and grabbed 2 bags of seven oaks wash and 2 of their own which are more expensive. Interested to see the difference once this rain dies down.

    Minerama 2017

Let me know how you go with the wash, think I might've gotten the same $20 bags.

    Minerama 2017

Anyone else go to crossmaglen today? I had a reasonable amount of success... doesn't compare to the guy with a sapphire the size of a 50c coin though  couple of decent sized blues came out too
