    Shotshell Headstamp Database

I've added mobile accessibility to the headstamp database. If you're on a mobile you should be able to scroll across now to see dates and comments. I've also added a lot of new types of shotgun shells.

Victorian Half Crown - beach find with nox

Yeh that would be nice, I've been back to the spot but the sand is too deep along the rest of the sea-wall. I did find a very corroded 1850's penny though so probably some more goodies buried under that sand.

There are two photos of it cleaned. Perhaps they didn't load.

Victorian Half Crown - beach find with nox

Well, I had to brag about this one so here it is. I headed down to a spot on the beach near where I live, where I had picked up around twenty Aussie pre-decimals a couple of months ago. It was on the beach right in front of a shop with a caravan park next to it, so I figured I might find some...

    Shotshell Headstamp Database

A pinfire shotgun shell has a pin sticking out the side of the head. The most common type is a center-fire which is the type you would have found where the primer is in the center of the head. I'm not 100% on the age of that shotgun shell you found but likely post ww2. Did it have ICI stamped on...

    Shotshell Headstamp Database

Well Eley, US Cartridge Co., and UMC come to mind as early shotshells we find over here. They will be 1880's onwards probably. You might find an early Eley pinfire. A detectorist in SA sent me a photo of one he found recently. I find they can be useful to date the area you are detecting.

    Shotshell Headstamp Database

I have recently put up a website that helps identify and date shotgun shell heads that you may find while metal detecting. It is not complete by any means but it covers most the major US and British ammunition makers of the 19th and 20th centuries. I still have a lot of headstamp photos and...

Cartwheel Penny From Copper Coast S.A.

The area had a large number of Cornish miners which is the reason for the cricket belt buckles I believe. Given the number I've found it must have been very commonly worn by men at the time.

Cartwheel Penny From Copper Coast S.A.

These are the cricket buckles found so far on this site. 2 by my dad and the rest by me, I got another today I have yet to clean. The 3rd buckle down has an English registry mark, 6th December 1867. Until I moved to this area 5 months ago I had never found a cricket belt buckle, I'm now up to 8...

Cartwheel Penny From Copper Coast S.A.

Yeh I came across some open ground that used to have houses on it presumably, there were piles of rubble here and there. It has yielded a lot of good stuff over the last week, the cartwheel was the pick of the coins but I picked up an 1806 or 7 halfpenny and about 30 British coins all up. We...

Cartwheel Penny From Copper Coast S.A.

I recently got on to a really nice spot for detecting and being the considerate guy I am, I invited my parents to head out there with me while they were on holidays. The first coin my dad pulled out of the ground was this cartwheel penny. I tried to be happy for him, while swallowing the curses...

    VR Badge, any ideas?

It should have a pin across the back.

    VR Badge, any ideas?

No makers marks. I'm assuming it's a British military badge but there was a lot of them, I have found a couple of different military buttons from Victorian era in the same place.

I hit the beach at North Beach a couple months ago after the council moved some sand from in front of the shop. Picked up about 30 pre-decimals including 5-6 florins. Mostly 1950-60's. I don't do a lot of beach detecting down in S.A. but every now and then I head down for a look. I never find...

Well, saw one of my bucket list coins come up this morning when my dad unearthed a cartwheel penny at a spot I took him too. Learned my lesson there, never reveal your spots to anyone until you've been right over them. What I'm aiming for this year are some nice older coins like a bullhead...

    VR Badge, any ideas?

Picked this up in an old area, pre-1910. Had no luck trying to find it on google, assuming it's Victorian era.

    19th Century Powder Flask

While driving around on a dirt road near old mine workings, I noticed piles of rubble out on crown land. Stopped for a quick look with the detector and soon realised I had found an area of old miners houses, since bulldozed. I have so far picked up 3 cricket belt buckles, 3 dog rego tags and...

Hi, I'm Mike and I'm based on Copper Coast of S.A. I've been detecting since the '80's on and off but didn't get completely addicted until I got the X-Terra 705 when it came out. Now using a Nox and one of those compulsive 'I'm not busy for the next 30 minutes, so why not go detecting' kind of guys.
