Hi think i got my first identifiable victorian silver another bucket lister looks like 1890 threepence, there seems to be a fine crust which iam having trouble cleaning any ideas how to get rid of that crust

I've had this problem before when using aluminium, the silver chloride (horn silver) crust you're trying to take off gets reduced to silver metal but only as a thin skin on the very top - ends up armouring the rest of the chloride crust... mechanical methods, eg. scuffing with aluminium foil + bicarb can break through the silver skin and flake it all off but as others have said elsewhere you're going to end up abrading the coin a little in the end - probably about all that can be done though.

Has anyone tried using sodium thiosulfate? I've bought some and done some short tests with slow but encouraging results, haven't had the time to really give it a good crack yet though. Seems to eat the weeny black bits that are hard to get pretty well...

I got my second florin this week and threepence got me excited looking to see if was an overdated one i also got a worn halfpenny

things are starting to slow down and now digging the deep iffy signal the results for today a very worn 5 cents but also this 1916 penny that came about 20 cm down would have to be my best condition penny and came up in this condition from a beach

This penny came from a foot down on the beach and was underneath a rock beginning to realise i might of missed a lot i also got 6 decimals ranging from 20 cents down to 1 cent pieces

Havent posted much lately but went out a couple weeks ago with a couple of forum members and got this 1879 threepence and a 1878 half penny i think the threepence is one of the best coins i found. Also seeking advice got a heavily trashed area and i think pre decimals deeper down but covered in ring pulls etc is there an equinox frequency i can use that may just focus on numbers like over 20s so i can get pennies etc but doesnt pick up the trash

Ive got one the same year, but has obviously been more circulated than yours.

Try the low frequencies for coppers and silver, 4,5 or 10kHz will make the high tones stand out and cut down on the chatter from ring pulls.
