The one in the ABC article doesn't look so great in the first pic but in the second pic it looks fantastic, they should be able to slice that up and get some incredible stones.

Yes, until faceted, gemstones really are just a mineral specimen. I reckon a few of those large diamonds in the link you posted GR could certainly do with a re-cut, though I don't think they'd risk losing any weight.

A lot of old precious stones seem to be poorly cut....
