This is a hand winch that I built and used for opal mining . As you can see it was made so that it could be dismantled for easy transport . Downee fittings were used to hold it all together . For safety one half of the fitting was welded to the tube . The extra tube on the base frame was put there so you can "land ' the bucket safely . We were using 60 lt. drums . I no longer have this winch .

I have managed to find a few sizes . The barrel was made from 3 inch nominal bore gal. pipe . The shaft was 3/4 inch dia. From the center of the barrel to the center of the handle was 15 inches . The handle was 10 inches long . Vertical distance from the center of the barrel to the ground was 45 inches . That is important if you are going to use 60 lt. drums .
