Probably wasn't a lot different here in the earliest days of the rushes - up to 30 per month dying on single goldfields. The "romance" is something we have added since (although even then, it sure beat starving to death in the potato famine, so it would not have been seen as so terrible then).
Not sure what relevance the guy having TB has in this video - digging gold does not give you TB!

I believe the doctor diagnosed TB along with damage to the lungs from long term exposure to mercury fumes and compressor diving..
