Totally agree, the foil+bicarb method is brutal on our coins, maybe moreso than what the main sentiment on the internet suggests. On coins that I really want to look after, I take off the horn silver by rubbing it in my fingers with a paste of bicarb. Takes absolutely ages sometimes but it's about the only thing that I've found will wear off the crust and leave the silver in decent condition. I get a toothpick with some paste on it to get into lettering etc. If I get impatient sometimes I end up giving it a gentle rub with foil but half the time I end up creating a layer of silver on top of the crust - sure it hides it but it also hides all the detail! Sometimes you can flake it off but it's never pretty afterwards.

Probably electrolysis would be my go - dont have the patience to needle the grime of some coins :)
 
On the hustings last month , mainly park with the CTX and Nox . Not much to brag about but if you persevered their were a couple of interesting finds .

A couple of old rings popped out, most likely costume and have them in a citric acid bath . A couple of coppers, with one being a Canadian commemorative 1 cent piece ( 1867 - 1967 ) ?

On the hustings again last night . Hit 3 targets over a couple of hours . A 5 cent piece , broken costume jewellery. I took a quick detour to the park where the Canadian 1 cent piece and other coppers were found and the Nox picked out a nice solid 19/20 signal. Out popped a gold ring . No markings until I had a look this morning and could just make out 9CT . Might be gold plated silver but its heavy , could be Canadian where the CT inscription is used on rings . Potentially a link behind both finds . Here are the picks .

Thanks Heatho and Smokey,

I took it to the local jewellery shop today and it comes in at 9.12 Ct in Gold content which is unusual , because it nearly all-ways is the opposite where gold content is below the stated amount, so Im happy with the find . It could of been a tragic night other wise :)
 
With the first major rain event for spring, I decided to go out with the ctx 3030.

Not much to brag about but it was good to get out in the rain for a detect anyway and get some exercise .

Below are the pics , most interesting find was a compact looking battery charger or music player has a USB port and opens up to put a small battery in . Any ideas on what it is feel free to comment.

Anyways here are the pics .

Out on the hustings during this rain event and enjoyed it even though not too much was found . The steady rain kept me cool and allowed me to detect longer . Bit of silver was the reward for effort . An interesting alloy pendant was found with with Chinese inscription and a dragon and tiger apposing each other . Detector used for the ctx . Hoping some cuts open up Omer the next day or so. Out on the huntings this arvo , and with the rain pushing in I decided to hit an old park nearby . A lot of the trees had been removed due to damage leaving some nice open areas to swing a detector . Decided on the Nox today and it wasnt long before I was picking up targets , all decimals . My last target jumped around on me in terms of TID and tone , however a ring popped out which took me by surprise , and that was my cue to head back home folks , happy with my first hunt of the year , and with a new site to target this year.

Anyways hear are the picks.

Tried to zoom in on the ring hallmark and cant tell if its 925 or 375 , Im leaning towards 925 though .
