I am trying to help a family member identify this. Found in the fire after burning some wood. Any ideas?

If it was in a fire probably either lead or aluminium can. They melt .

There is an old saying, if you are not sure or if you have to ask it's not gold!
Meaning, that a real gold nugget is generally pretty obvious from the weight or heft in the hand, the way the light plays off it (no dark bits like pyrites) and the colour.
