Recent tumble of Quartz jelly bean crystals from Stannifer, done in
a VIBRATORY ROCK TUMBLER using Kaolin powder and aluminium oxide 14,000 polish and water.
No soap or borax or ceramic media used, as stones were of mixed sizes no
larger than a about 5x2 cm. The Kaolin powder was used to make a slurry
instead of using sugar, sourced from a pottery supplier. Mine was sold
under the name of Eckanite, structure is Kaolin 99%, mica1%, and Quartz, a trace.
Chemical analysis found numerous minerals , one was Aluminium oxide at 38%
which is a bonus as it lowers the amount of 14,000 alum polish needed.
A thick slurry is needed i found as the amplifying action of the vibe is quiet
aggressive which can be adjusted with a bit of fiddling. Instead of over
a week in a rotary tumbler the vibe does it in 3 days.
My interest was sparked by someone overseas using Kaolin Pectate in solution
that is used in animal husbandry. hope this helps someone.
Recipe for 3kg quartz.
2 table spoons of kaolin
1 table spoon of Al oxide 14000 polish
Stones were prepolished using 800 silica carbide.
always experimenting Stones are dry when photographed.
