Hi everybody,

New to the site. I found this rock in my backyard. Can anyone help identify what it is? I have no idea. Is it worth something? Are there gems inside?

Area - Sydney (Inner West)

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hard to tell from that photo but possibly malachite , does it have any spherical / curved bits on the other side ?

Malachite can be polished for jewellery but not something of value sorry.

There is a few geotechs here who will post when they finish wiping the dribble of egg yolk off their chin smile

Possibly chert. Not 100% on that though it looks like it to me.

Most probable slag , the fluxes , Borax etc ., look like glass .

Many years ago I did see an electric arc furnace in Marrickville ? Even in those days it surprised me , right in amongest the shops . He was a scrap metal man . He had bought it auction as they could not pay the import duty for the furnace .
