I think I was actually referring to your light stone. The one with the pink/red flash.
I’m not sure if I would have the self control to stop myself from focusing on that central area of colour that jumps out at you.
... but don’t worry about me. I’ve run out of opal so I’m full of good ideas for everyone else! smile

My daughter and I joined the local lapidary club recently. My first attempt at opal. I bought the rough at the local gem show for $101576898886_opal1.jpg

A few months ago I shaped this opal from a piece of rough I got from my dad. I then carved a step in it to reveal a bit more colour that was hiding in a deeper colour bar.
Fast forward a few months and I designed a pendant, took a gold coin given to me by my grandmother, together with a gold necklace from my mum and found a good manufacturing jeweller to make it happen.
A new family heirloom Christmas present for my wife. present smile 1577309386_9dcca1f5-b5f0-4388-8a55-42e8b65ba420.jpg

Thanks Billy and RM. My wife loves the fact that each part of it has a family origin and I designed it for her.
I feel like I’ve taken things that have been stored in boxes for years and turned them into something to be enjoyed. A rewarding result all round.

Thought I had better finish off a few projects before the year ended.

This x-cube (scientific dichroic cube) has just come off the wax and it exploded into life with an early display of New Years fireworks

Thanks guys........I put it on a mirrored turntable on the kitchen bench this morning, it mesmerised me for a significant period of time and my coffee went cold.

ops .... I should have posted a before shot....

The X you can see on the left are coloured filaments of different primary colours. They are used in projectors or for science experiments.

1577752327_0474a336-f772-4004-ba36-785f1a47dbe1.jpg

They are good to cut with because they just look like ordinary crystal glass and facets are easy to see, it is not until you remove it from the dop that the light refracts and makes the cut gem sing.. I think these cubes will be my go-to when trialing new designs; cheap enough to make a mistake with but dazzling enough to disguise any.

party Trippy on a turntable, cheap Acid man..... lol smile Had a look at these on eBay and yes, cheap for some crazy effects. Did you just Dop on a flat face and go from there, or create a new Dopping table off centre? This is a killer compared to Mystic Quartz.

Doped straight on the top of the X with superglue - was slightly off centre but don’t think that matters, other than making the corners a bit off the filament plane.

Had plenty of depth in the stone, so trimmed a couple of mm off with a saw when I transferred it, so if dropping on the adjacent side, the x might end up low or high and might give a more dominant colour spectrum. - worth an experiment

Hey guys recently got some gems cut. All sapphires except yellow which is chrysoberyl. Between 0.2ct to 0.5ct cut. Very happy with the results. Will try to get better pics when I get back from fires.

Thanks wally. Manage to find someone to cut them at such a small size. The cabbed chrysoberyl I'll be getting put into a necklace for the wife and one of the royal blue sapphires in a ring. The sparkle of the sapphires is amazing when in the right light
