Hey guys,

Anyone had a go detecting at Panton Hill in recent times? Saw some posts from a number of years ago but nothing recent. I checked out Boomers Gully reserve last year and was impressed by the diggings there. I understand some areas like the narrow section of Long Gully etc are off limits as heritage listed but are places like the nearby Chinamans gully ok to detect? Can't find much about it online.

Hi angus, Not exactly Panton Hill, but I did read somewhere recently about diggings in Kinglake (sorry mate, I don't recall whether it was on here or somewhere else). Apparently they used to find gold there and it's only about 20 kms from Panton Hill, and Warrandyte is only about 13 K, so there probably would be something there. I've never heard of any big nuggets from any of those places, but maybe for panning or using an SDC 2300 it might be ok? It might be an idea to try and find some early mining reports and have a squiz at any mention of what was found there.

I lived in St Andrews and Kinglake west (Pheasant Creek) for awhile.

I remember a mine shaft in the back of St Andrews toward Panton Hill. Gold found at Extons Rd Kinglake Central.

I was told only this week that a rifle had been found embedded in a grown tree with a gold filled poke at its base near ST Andrews.

Hey angus750, I know this area well being not far from me , a lot of history there being part of the caladonia diggings rush which started in Warandyte moved up through Panton hill , Smiths gully , Queenstown (st Andrews) Kinglake ( mountain hut rush )and on to Rushworth and Bendigo . Do your research youll find lots of interesting reading . I cut my teeth panning in these areas many years ago . The area your talking about I wouldnt say is the greatest for detecting (I have had ago and wouldnt waste my time there ) as the gold was genarally very small more panning size but you may pick up a relic if your in the right spot . Wouldnt worry to much about Kinglake as its hard to even find a color in the overgrown creeks . If your after detectable gold you may have to go further afield . Cheers Booney

The shaft at the back of St. Andrews would be the Black Cameron mine in Smiths gully which was worked privately till only a few years ago think its all shut down now . The gold found in kinglake central was found by my late neighbor John Easdown back in the 1930-50s John and his dad found color in the creek and dug the Big Ben mine but it was shut down in 1957 ish after the mine manager failed to join the adit to the shaft the gold was in the blue metal in the quarts but only flour gold very fine . The poppit head was still there until 2009 Black Saturday its all gone now and the shafts been filled in . I had the pleasure of panning with John in the creek were they found the gold ,it was only fine flour gold but he told me some storys , he was 96 and still mining quarts crystals when he passed that was a great memory . Cheers Booney

Sorry to side track this thread but that's a great write up Booney, would be fantastic to know or get to chat to someone like John Easdown and hear the stories of what it was like years ago. Thanks for sharing :Y:

I was working out that way a few years back and decided to go for a detect. The diggings looked promising. I found nothing although I ran into another prospector loading some buckets for panning. He was impressed and bragged about the 1/2 ounce of gold he had found there over the last 3 years. Hard work by the sounds of it. :(

I was shown today a multi level addit on private property amongst heavy workings. I have been given permission to detect here.

apologies for the thread dig (not realy sorry :p)

anyway, that st andrews mine is no longer in operation, met the old guy a few times when he was working it (around early 2000's) he let us pan anything he left behind as he wasnt allowed to sluice on site so all the material was trucked out.

that mine seems to be a little hot spot with people prospecting from time to time, but there is some other areas in the bush id love to run a detector over if i ever get the chance. Not much information can be found on the old workings of that mountain :)
