Recycling, News, Do's & Dont's

yeah E/B, that one is controversial. Its a great idea for general waste, but as far as I know (some) of the councils are still collecting recyclables in a separate bin. Dont know if they are sending it to this plant or to a recycling facility.
Incinerating plastics is not an ideal outcome. Hopefully over time more plastics recycling & re-forming industries pop up.
A bit of info on the plant here, but this is written by the owner/operator, so of course its biased to only give the good attributes.

It's a purpose built facility & a lot different to sending waste to coal fired power stations. That wouldn't work in a thermal coal plant was what I was saying.
Good idea though :Y: & even better if they can capture or negate the toxic smoke/fumes from burning plastics?
While it might appear more environmentally friendly it remains to be seen how cost effective & efficient it is having to use a specialist process to thermally treat the waste. Even the company says "However, the incineration plant will not immediately recover the heat produced from its operations (although Phoenix Energy has said it will be designed for the potential for a future steam off take), which couldlimit its efficiency."

We used to have a large plastic recycling company in Adelaide but it closed down because of the cost of electricity.

The Government's should be subsidising & helping these businesses if we want to be fair dinkum about it.

One of the biggest problems is the contamination - shitty nappies aren't recyclables you bogans!
There are massive stockpiles of our recyclable rubbish in Indonesia. China was buying our waste & had plants there but have pulled out altogether leaving the waste behind.
There was a lot of media coverage which gave the false impression that we weren't actually recycling any waste at all.

so it would appear that the recyclables have been taken elswhere, & not incinerated. ... maybe!

My local tip does the recycling thing ,charge $15 for a 6x4 trailer of green waste to leave it there, then charge $30 a 6x4 trailer full of green mulch to take it home, the only thing they don't charge you to leave it there is metal :/

Never buy Mulch from a Tip... It contains every garden pest and fungus known to man... And some of them are real devastating to your Garden...

My Sister learnt the hard way and had to pull all her plants out to try and stop a nasty fungus/ Nematode thing that came in the mulch... :argh:

I never buy it lone wolf for that reason and other's i make my own, i see trailer loads all the time leaving the tips ,they think it is cheaper, but go to the garden suppliers they have mulch that is made the proper way with all the goodies in it for about $40 for a cubic meter, does not take much to work out what is cheaper

This story is from back in April this year, but is a good example of how recycling & re-processing plastics can be built up as a new industry, but a lot more investment is needed.

DD, The suggestion being made here by the ABC is that it needs the fed govt to step in and subsidise the industry to make it viable.
Scott Morrison said about the farmers: The govt could very easily give money to the farmers to get them over a very difficult period but farming is a business like any other business... so if the business is not viable it's time to consider your options.

You cannot nationalize all the businesses that need propping up., the country would go broke.
Jeremy Corbin wants to nationalize everything in the UK. Can't wait to see what happens there.

E/B, what I was getting at was tax breaks & Infrastructure from the State & Feds to help get projects off the ground. In the long run the employment & tax revenues make it balance out. They dont have to, nor should they, prop any business up for the long term

years ago a lot of councils around WA (& probably elsewhere too) removed most rubbish bins from public spaces, & from a report i read a while back it is because "it costs the council money to empty them"!! DAH. As rate-payers we employ & pay our council(s) to administer our shire/town/city.
There are very few bins on our beaches anymore, & it always annoys the oop: out of me the amount of glass i find on beaches. Rubbish is one thing if bio-degradeable (but the slobs should still take it with them), but glass gets broken & half buried in sand its about the worst!
Hopefully the roll-out of glass bottle refunds here will alleviate some of this. (We had in bcak in the 70's).
Anyway, in today news I see the Vic Gov is making a noise about specific glass recycling bins.

I work at containers for change, I get smashed everyday by average 30,000 items.
As it's cash in hand I get the regular pensioners that are out there everyday looking for it.
It's definitely cleaning up Australia.

There's always a queue at my local Container for Change... :/
