I'm looking to buy a minelab gpx 4500. must be fairly new and in good condition. Also i need advice on which power supply to use for charging detector batteries, mobile phones and computer laptops. I'm looking at a Gentrax 2KW pure sine wave inverter portable camping generator for $399 or a battery box set up with a solar panel that works and won't break the bank. All advice would be greatly appreciated.

For general charging of gear don't use a generator.

Genny negatives
-only charges while it runs - does not store electricity
-have to carry fuel
-noise/fumes
-some sites wont allow them

Genny positives
-good for high current draw gear such as power tools
-doesn't need sun
-delivers 240 V so can plug in devices via mains cords

Batt Box/Solar negatives
-needs some sunlight
-needs 12 volt to mains240 v inverter OR DC to DC charger for your device voltage (not a big deal to buy these units)

Batt Box/solar positives
-stores power so can charge at night etc/on the move/in vehicle
-quiet no fumes no need fuel
-can charge from vehicle
-capable of short term high current delivery (+12 volt can feed 240 volt inverter if mains voltage needed)
-can double as car starter if main battery cactus

Can you suggest a reliable batt box / solar unit that will do the job and keep the wife off my back, thanks

These are good:

Mine has a slightly used car battery in it and works fine.

As for solar panels I have:

Look under the section "soft folding kits" and select....again, mine is 12V 120W.

That is all you need to get a 12V camel.

For 240 Volt inverter I don't use much power at 240V so have something like this:

For 12V to 12V/other DC voltages I use this which can select the output DC voltage you need for the device you want to charge:
