Personally ive never had an issue with a little off topic.
Haha coz you havnt been here long enough..It won't be long.l
Yeah i know what you are saying, just that sometimes with no off topic there is little or no posts. Id rather a little OT to read than nothing at all. At least the pics of Axel are in company of the QED and out in the field.

Sorry kicksome, but I don't think I am allowed to discuss future developments without Howard's approval. He will most likely announce his intentions on the AEGPForum, if he has not already done so.

Dont worry about Axe, he does real good. Hes had a good feed on roo poo!
Strange behavior that. There was a little Australian Terrier up the road from where I lived as a kid, that used to follow me around whenever I was riding a horse around the streets. It would follow happily behind just waiting for the horse to deliver a hot steaming pile, then it would happily chow-down and set about demolishing the lot. It used to turn my stomach so badly that I had to Gee-up the neddy and try to lose the disgusting little critter before he'd finished eating.
Anyway, back on topic. Great Work/results Reg and James. Some lovely pics there of some very nice looking Gold
Looks like the QED is an awesome detector.

“Interfacion Pty Ltd is pleased to announce that the QED has been modified to allow the use of DD (double D) and CC (Concentric Coplanar) coils. This change involves a simple change to the electronics within the control box.
The firmware has also been upgraded to include a further improved Ground Balance.
All detectors being delivered to new customers from Monday 5th August 2019 will already have the above upgrades included.
As a show of commitment to all QED owners, the hardware modification to allow use of the DD and CC coils will be provided at no cost.
Of course and as per the QED warranty, the firmware update is provided free of charge, except for P&H.
Any QED owner who plans to attend the Laanecoorie Bash is encouraged to bring their detector along and have it upgraded at no cost.
Standard postage and handling arrangements apply to other owners. Send via Australia Post the box (minus batteries) along with a pre-paid, pre-addressed bag/box to:

With many thanks to the likes of Reg Wilson and JR Beatty. Its input from the likes of these two that Howard bases his updates off.

Most importantly, A lot of Good Honest Friends. Maybe one day Lucky.
I've gotta say, I don't own a QED but their customer commitment and after sales service seems exemplary. Most other detector companies I'm sure, would come out with all the upgrades in a new model, along with a new higher price, and an immediate lowering in value of the earlier model/s. Impressive indeed

Great news... ill be going to the bash thats for sure
“To all wanting info about the latest QED updates:
1) the new ground balance is just that, a completely new method of performing the GB. All with the same physical circuitry, with a more advanced method of GB being performed via the software/firmware.
The changes you will see are the range of MGB is now 1 - 300, with the factory preset at 150.
The GB is still performed in the same way as before, as is the AGB method.
2) The values of a few QED electronics components have changed, which has enabled the QED to accept DD and CC coils. This has greatly expanded the use of the QED and it is now able to use all of the latest coil designs (i.e. concentric coils).
It should be noted that the QED accepts these coils without having to ‘select’ via a switch selection the type of coil your using (DD or CC or Mono) as is the case with other detectors”

“QED Update.
One more change is that the number of modes has been decreased from 15 to 10, with beach mode now mode 11.
You will find that you may/will be able to use a lower mode with your favourite coils”

Sorry if this has been asked before...
Is it known if there are any future plans for usb to be incorperated into the control box to allow updates by user at home?
It would sure save a lot of time and mucking about with postage etc... not to mention time of the maker spent doing free updating for no profit. Would be much easier for him to just upload the new firmware to internet for 10 minutes or whatever, the bang!!! All machine updating work by him is done and back to making more units and $$$$
And it would help for any international release of the machine also.
Seems like it would be win win for everybody..
I am very keen to buy one, but this is an issue for me (not a dealbreaker, but has influence on my choice).
Thanks,
Jason

Jason, best to contact Howard directly and express your concerns. I wouldnt let it be a deal breaker though. Upgrades aren’t compulsory but its better than having to sell then buy a later improved model. You dont have to send the whole detector back. One screw, disconnect the coil and less than $20 return within the week. Small price for free upgrades.

Thanks aussiedigs.its not a huge factor in my decision, ans maybee there is a reason it wont ever have usb, but it just seems like a thing that could be handy for everyone. And i would hate to buy one then a usb version/upgrade comes out a few months later. (then i would have to send it in to get the capability to not send it in, in future). DOH!!!
How would i contact him?

I will stand corrected, however I believe it won't happen because Minelab have patented the method of updating software in metal detectors via USB port.
Cheers, Rick
Hi Jason,
The updates may also include component changes as well as firmware which negates the function of a USB or similar port for software only upgrades. Having units factory upgraded also removes the risk of customers 'bricking' their units.
I was fortunate enough to meet Howard recently who spent time showing me some of his development boards. Having seen how these are designed and assembled I'm confident that should you purchase a new unit and then all of a sudden a new feature is available it would be a simple matter of negotiating the purchase of the upgrade/replacement of that part or panel.
As they say... 'He who hesitates is lost'. Buying a detector and enjoying using it is far more rewarding than thinking about the next model
To contact Howard, he is active on the QED detector group (official) facebook group, or reach out here: http://www.qedmetaldetectors.com.au/contact
Happy Hunting.

Hi rick. I wonder how xp fits into that situation as the deus updates via usb also

Gidday noel. Im not really holding out as such. Its not going to be needed for around 3 weeks so just enquiring about things that are of interest. (Im pretty sold on it already to be honest)
I was also researching the wireless headphone transmitters as i like the idea of no physical (just emotional) attachment to the machine.
In the meantime i will zip him an email at the link you gave anyway as im not really a facebook kind of guy.
Thanks jason

Yeah, not sure ! Just remember reading somewhere that Minelab had a patent over USB software upgrade, so not sure how XP are doing it !
I may be mistaken !
EDIT : Seems like the patent might only be for trasfer via USB between detectors ?

All good Jason; I've been guilty too often on stalling on buying things waiting for the next model to come out for fear of being stuck with some obsolete.
I was also researching the wireless headphone transmitters as i like the idea of no physical (just emotional) attachment to the machine.
Aussiedigs put me on to the Quest wirefree mate wireless kit and this has worked really well so far, I know Reg Wilson has tested these out successfully too. These are about $140 - you can order them online. I got mine from Phase Technical (https://phasetechnical.com.au/product/q … -mate-kit/) and I know other dealers advertise them as well, support your local dealer if they have them
If you have large headphones you might want to consider an amplifier as well. My earbuds are OK without an amp but bigger headphones benefit from it. The amp I use was from eBay - a 'generic-cheap' Neoteck portable amplifier that was about $37. I know specialised amps exist on the market but I've not used them.
I tried a mates Bose noise cancelling headphones - absolutely brilliant, I've heard from others that even cheaper noise cancelling headphones (like those from Aldi) also do the job well.

Im running a cheap amp off Ebay at $25 with my earbuds. Its not absolutely necessary but the extra volume does help make it a little clearer. Maybe my hearing isnt 100%! There is some crackling but it in no way interferes with the tones.

Its a bit hard to understand all the jargon on that patent rick. I think its some system where you can save or upload setting to a computer, and adjust them on the computer also (maybee with some sort of diagnostics of previous use. Not sure).
And also the ability to swap settings detector to detector direct via usb.
