I had a decent break in the weather today allowing for a second run over the racecourse site. After the good run of silvers on the previous trip, things were pretty slow to start off with -- first cab off the rank was a 1907 English threepence found at the base of some pines. Slowly but surely the silvers started to flow - good thing is that they were mostly silvers with just one copper and some BB's for the outing.

I had a sniff around the buildings with no coins found, though did come up with an Army officer's pip and a gilt button with shank. Continuing on detecting the open areas I located a Rams head shilling, and later on a fantastic 1904 English shilling which is considered to be relatively scarce. Finished off the day with a few more threepences and sixpences before heading home (and not without another visit from the friendly cows). :D

Dam that's what I have.
Mine turn out crap..
I need to take some time and learn how to use it. :) :Y:

Awesome coins, never seen that design on a shilling and love the army pip too. Wonder if he was high enough up to avoid a dressing down for losing that at the races?

I am just using the standard settings and touch the screen to focus in on the intended subject. The photos are pretty high resolution so you can always crop the photo to show more detail. :D

Another half reasonable day saw me back at the racecourse to have a bit more of an explore around. First 5 minutes of being there saw two 50% silver thrips come out of the ground, though unfortunately you have to work through the 100's of ring pulls and pull tabs that litter certain areas of the site to pick them out. Venturing further out into the paddock I'd stumble across the odd silver now and again, you would really have no hope unless you apply gridding.

Decided to give a solitary large gum tree out amongst the sheep to see if anything was dropped - walked straight over a 1914 half penny, then a worn bunhead Victorian threepence (18??).

Managed a few more coppers this time tracing a route along the fenceline, though proved very tiresome due to the amount of buried junk. I left most of my junk targets in the final wrap up to give an idea of the junk to coin ratio.

Still did well considering I thought the coins might be a bit more scarce this time around (been over 30 silvers so far), guess there is still life in the site yet. :)

Thanks guys, yes definitely a bit of trash to work through but worth the effort. Don't think I have ever come across so many threepences on a site before.

Been back for another go today with the HF coil, will post some results a bit later. :D

After a bit of aimless wandering today, I thought it was about time to put away the 11" LF coil, and break out the 9" HF for a bit more detailed detecting around the racecourse ruins - more to the point the real junky spots. I've got to say that this little coil always surprises me on what it will find vs what the larger coil can't even signal on due to masking. I literally retraced my steps from the previous day and picked up clear tones of silvers and coppers that were originally missed. The 1886 Vic threepence was literally a metre from the side door of the ruins, I can't think of how many people would have run a detector over that ground. Slowly working around the ruins a few more coins were liberated (all of the coppers and a couple more silvers), the rest of the silvers were located back in the field again. The oldest copper was a 1922 penny. :D
