That's a really nice job Wally, I'm sure the missus will love it. Natural spinel or manufactured? Either way cracker stone. That will really put you in the good books. :p

I does go against my natural instinct Heath, this is my one and only synthetic so far. I must say it is a very impressive stone to look at being just under 5ct.

I would love to have a natural one of the same size and clarity to play with, but I guess I would need to work out how to make a crown or tiara then.

I just got home from spending time with family in Melbourne. My MIL showed me the stones below that were cut buy my wifes grandfather over 50 years ago. There is about 100 gems in the collection. Im not sure what they all are. But Im impressed with the collection. He also made the rings pictured along with some that my wife and MIL wear every day. I love the history of the stones. Enjoy

Looks like some interesting stones, I'm seeing possibly Topaz on the bottom, Amethyst, Aquamarine bottom right, maybe Morganite right centre and top, could be some golden Sapphire in the centre, looks like he was a talented cutter and jeweler, certainly worth finding someone who could identify them for you. That's a special collection :inlove:

I don't know much about him. He was a chemist in the sugar mill in Gordonvale Qld. The stones look amazing in the flesh. The yellow ones and pale blues are beautiful. I know how hard it is to photograph them now. There always seems to be a spot that is too bright and kills the shot.. I have put my hand up for the collection if the rest of the family doesn't want them. MIL has earmarked them for me. :) She's a great lady

The only history I have atm is that granddad bought the stones from all over the place. They are a minimum of 50 years old since they were cut. He cut them all and made the rings for the stones as well. There are 3 sisters in the family and each has chosen some stones that they would like for their kids as heirlooms and the rest may be passed onto me. There is a bit more of the opal that is in the rings that I like. Its very pretty. I would probably sell off some of the stones if they are given to me but at this stage they belong to the family.

Small triangular sapphire shaped rough with veiled inclusions but some exceptional clarity and colour at the point.

Was a bit of an experiment at cutting my first triangle, but you can see why I gave it a go....

Happy with the outcome at 0.6ct and different light sources play around with the colour. The veiled inclusions are significant with some orientations of the stone but I think a carefully selected setting would work.

I assume the inclusions would respond well to heat treating and I might give it a go at some stage to see what difference it makes.
