Hi guys,

This Saturday is the start of Murray Cod season in Vic/NSW and possibly elsewhere.
My good mates and I started making this an annual camping trip up on the Murray River 20+ years ago and I had attended every year up until 4 years ago when I got into prospecting and have only had 1 fishing/camping trip up there in those last 4 years, we used to have Australia Day w/end and Easter as family trips and Cod Opening and Cray Week (Queens Birthday in June) as boys trips along with the odd Bastards week (Boxing Day to NYE).

I was at my mates daughters 21st a few weeks back and late into the night after many refreshments I agreed to make it to this years Cod Opening as it's been too long between trips for me.
Finished work at 10:30 am today and snuck home to start getting the gear packed, leaving at 5:30 am tomorrow and back on Monday arvo. Don't really care if I catch a fish or even wet a line, it'll just be great to get back up the Murray and catch up with mates again.

Good luck Pete, its going to be a hot one on Saturday take plenty of refreshments, looking forward to hearing how you get on .
Cheers Booney

Fridge is full and plenty of backup at hand so should stay well hydrated
Should be a great trip and the myth of the venison sausages will be spoken about around the fire :drooling:

Sounds like a top weekend coming up Pete have fun.

My plan was to get amongst it this weekend with my new purchase :) then I was reminded it's our youngest grand child's 1st birthday on Sunday :(. I'll get amongst it another weekend though :Y:.

My young blokes are pretty keen to get going so there will hopefully be a few photos to post when we do.

Well, had a great trip away up at Ulupna.
The weather was fantastic, the storm that blew through as I was heading to bed at 2am Sunday meant no sleep and Tony and myself were trying to hold the camp together at 3am while the others were oblivious to the storm, at least no sleep meant no hangover ;)

The fishing was quiet and I only managed a tiny Trout Cod on Friday and finally got a 54cm Cod Sunday afternoon, Tony got a few Cod and Trout Cod between 40 - 60 cm and Gus took top honours with a 61 cm Cod. Paul & Jake managed a few each between 30 - 50 cm and not so lucky Phil went fish-less :p
Best baits were Beef, Pork or Chicken strips. Bardi grubs and cheese were smashed by pickers so the big meaty baits were the go to.
All fish released unharmed to fight another day :Y:

Looks like a great trip, love opening weekend on the Murray.
Nice fish, could have been 1cm longer,
Not happy I couldn't go this year, but will be up at Wakool soon.

That's one thing I've always been proud of, my mates and I have never kept a Cod in 20 years of fishing for them, just a quick pic for the memory and released for others to enjoy the thrill of catching them.
I never begrudge someone a feed of fish but IMO Cod are too good to catch just once. I keep a few Snapper and Flatties for the table as they taste better :Y:
