i will soon be moving to PNG to take up a new job in the tropics. While I'm in that part of Melanesia, I'd like to spend some time fossicking around with a metal detector.
. I was wondering whether anyone has spent time in PNG and if the have what spots might you suggest are worth having a look at !!

Regards

Roderick

if you step from the city into the bush without two bodyguards armed with AK47's you wont last 2 months and the local fellas will have you on a spit .

go into the highlands without 3 armed bodyguards and you wont last a day.

every mining camp will have armed guards

for a reason.

Just stay in your compound and only go out on organised trips with armed escorts.
Sad but true.
There is a reason the $ are good.

Well that put a downer on the PNG propecting prospects.

i have a mate who met some tourists on the plane last time he flew up to work in PNG

then as fate would have it the same tourists were in the hiking party where 2 - 3 people were chopped to pieces with machetes 2 days later

and it happened only ~ 20 km from his camp

its not fuzzy wuzzy dreamtime

its fuzzy wuzzy choppy head and eat em up cannibal country and to them thats as normal as you going to buy some sausages from the butcher

I worked in the western highland of PNG. And yes our site and camps were guarded with armed security. Not a place I will go back to quickly. they have tribal wars often and the day I flew out I didn't think I was going to make it. 33 killed at a village next to the airport. Hard to believe that its is on our door step. Hell, one of our pilots was killed at Mt Hagen for a few Kina. But maybe I was there at a bad time. a few years ago now.
However I did meet some great people there also and it was interesting to talk to some of the locals working there. An education. But I think it will be a while before it is safe to freely prospect without fear of being robbed and worse by the raskels.

What a tragic story HeadsUp. Certainly wasn't arguing the verasity of your information and advice, I am somewhat aware of the dangers in PNG from my father when he was working up there. It is a shame to be in an area that has such great potential but is thwarted by the dangers of the local. I would strongly advise Roderick to head your advice as I am sure he will.

he would have been sat down by the boss and given the rules when he arrived at the airport.

its possible his employer failed to mention those small details before his exployment so as to not scare him off.

otherwise they might find it hard to get staff.

PNG, is a beautiful place, but strong tribal and corrupt roots. Be careful mate..

Have a read of the Ion Idriess book "Gold Dust & Ashes" 1947. Awesome read. You should find a copy on ebay.
