hi all just wanted to let you all know im working on a small Victorian book that includes fossil sites/locations for starfish shells trilobites crinoids etc. it will be only 60 or so pages and include some photos of the fossils and where to find them on a map. since these sites have not been mapped before my info is valuable to the palaeontologist who might want to find another species of fossil not recorded. I would be selling the books for about $30 plus postage as this is just to cover costs to get to the sites and time/effort to map and accurately GPS plot each fossil site as well as costs of printing out the actual writing/photos witch im making a limited number of the book.

just a question would you buy/be interested in this sort of thing if you didn't have to go out there and do all the footwork/research to find all the sites included in the book ?

just another hint these fossils sites are not well know or recorded and are in central Victoria.

I'll buy the book for sure.
How do you stop the particular areas from being cleaned out of their fossils though once the book is published?

not likely to be cleaned out as the fossil beds/strata extends for many kilometres and over a wide area with many rocky outcrops. and there's always fossils found in the creeks as lose rocks

I actually went out last week and found several more sites in total I have found 28 fossil sites over a 15km area all very similar fossils found in the same rock/strata.

my goal is to find another 7 sites witch will be in total 35 different fossil sites to visit in the book over an area of 15 to 20km so there's a fair amount of different sites to visit for the same or very similar types of fossils however some of the tracks to get to them may be 4x4 only as Vic roads don't re surface/grade them often enough and erosion takes over not to mention idiots who sit on their motorbikes doing wheelies on the spot creating massive deep ruts witch turn into bog holes.

here's a teaser

in this photo these lines marked out in red are the layers in which will yield starfish you simply use a bolster to crack them open down the line these types of tips ill be sharing in the book as if you don't know what to look for or how to break the stone correctly with the cleavage you won't find any fossils.

not well formed but this is a starfish found by simply splitting certain types of strata mainly shales witch ill photograph in show my readers how to read the rocks and what to look for

Good advice.I smashed open heaps of rocks before I turned up any fossils.
Is that second starfish in siltstone?

correct but only in certain layers of the strata.

Probably be good to include technical and technique data as well so people will be schooled up properly as they read your book.
and definitely collecting etiquette so there are only footprints left behind by someone who has read your book and gone on an adventure to search.

update about half way done been busy with other projects ive found multiple fossil locations Flowerdale clounbinane Wandong Kinglake Kilmore east just to name a few have done huge amount of foot work walking up and down hills to find more sites. just getting photos and GPS plots finished and slowly putting all the info together.
