Love the sense of humor you blokes have.
Tall tales and true make the Aussie bush even more mysterious.

Quickly told here's another one for you believers and non believers.
Ran into a bloke I hadn't seen for a few years and agreed to give him a hand cutting wood out local bush. We are both from the area and this very subject came up whilst we were chatting between loads. I told him my story (awaiting his reaction) and he barely flinched. The local Pharmacist once saw one years back and so we both take it for granted that many of the locals for that reason alone are open to the idea of big cats roaming around. It does get a few stories going in these quiet one on one moments. Noone wants to be thought of as a kook or nut job.

Any way he tells me about his great uncle (who I knew of) who after much ridicule stopped talking about what is a well publicized sighting. Before then I had no idea he was the guy. Story goes his uncle was driving home one evening a literally ran into one. He had a bit of speed up and took it down one side of the ute, got spooked and continued home shaken. In daylight the next day he went back to the spot (skid marks still on the road) searched around and came up empty handed.

Now this old bloke keeps it kinda quiet but word gets out and without even knowing the bloke more than a few locals can't or won't believe the story and dismiss him calling him all sorts of things. He promptly stops talking about it for a couple decades (at least up until a couple years ago) and eventually the story dies off.

Funny thing is he still has the photos of the ute damage, a written account of the night including a sketch he drew, and.....unbelievable as it sounds...hair from the animal in question.

At this point I'm sitting there kinda dumbstruck. I ask if his uncle would talk about it show me any of his stuff and his reply was basically yes but that the old boy was still pretty upset at being thought of badly that he'd probably take some convincing. I've since asked after and have yet to make a time to go see him in person but we've chatted on the phone a couple times. He's pretty cagey about the whole incident and it's not really my place to state publicly some of the things he's been good enough to share.

That said there's two important things to note here. He's promised to pass on his information and everything he has from the night once he goes to trusted family so the story might be told properly after he's gone.

The other thing is the animal in question. I'm certain he's certain what he encountered was not a puma, panther, or any other "feline" animal, instead very possibly, a remnant beast thought long gone from these shores.I won't really comment any further than to accept he at least is fairly sure what he believed it to be, as for me, I look forward to the day his samples are finally sent for testing just to give his encounter a final chapter whatever the outcome. Safe to say I've got an open mind about it all, this story, and many others.

That pic IS A Fake... Been well and truly proven several years ago... Have a look at the angle of the front paw... Then have a look at the front paw on the one under the Guy's arm.... Same Stuffed Panther... They even admitted it was staged....

Your story Hotrob, aligns with what I have been told by some Retired US Pilots who were stationed Here at the time... thumbsup

An open mind is a very good thing and not believing all you see or hear is also. wink
I've lived in, camped in, flown over and experienced a few remote wild areas in my time so far, and I personally would find it saddening if there weren't undiscovered species of plants, insects, animals etc in those places.
A common theme to some of those places, is that the few people that live there are not connected to the internet and also are very tight lipped on what they see and know until you make friends with them and gain some trust.
I find the concept of big cats roaming around the vast, rugged Blue Mountains area fascinating and given the spread of "human development" across the planet, I like to believe that it is possible they exist cool 8)

I keep an open mind wink

If you can't or don't shoot it just look for foot print's and photograph with a scale recognisable object (yeah I know print's can be forged) and hopefully find shed hair to test by DNA. I'm the same as you Billy, I keep an open mind I've seen some big feral cat's as big as staffies and built like brick shite house cat's. I'll truly believe once I see a body to scale against a recognisable object.

You hear stories regarding panthers roaming the bush. What would you do if you saw this while detecting??

https://www.prospectingaustralia.com.au … 278610.jpg

This was a very good fake. Turned out to be a statue of one that someone put out and snapped a photo of. The big give away is there is no eye shine from the camera. Believe what you want but having seen three panthers in my life I have no doubt that they exist. First one I saw was when I was 18 heading north to Jurien Bay. I was just past Cataby when one ran across the road in front of me. My passenger at the time also saw it. The second two my wife and I saw at the same time. It was six years ago and we was heading east from a place called Jerramungup. We were about 50km out of Jerramungup when at the same time we both saw two large black cats cross the road. Defiantly not a feral cats as they were longer than a road lane is wide.

I think you're right about that LW.
A couple of years ago a local farmer went to check some cattle he had on agistment in a bush paddock. When he got there the cattle were mobbed up in one corner of the paddock & were very spooked ....... when he checked closer one cow had deep scratches gouged in its flank. He thought it that abnormal that he videoed it.
Later that week he had to go into town & thought he would report it to the local DEPI department. They were not slightly interested & thanked him for the info. Before he left he told them he had video evidence & handed over the tape. He then went & did a bit of shopping before going home.
When he got home he found a couple of DEPI vehicles & some suddenly very interested officers. They asked him to show them the location of the paddock on a map & he told them he'd take them there in person ...... they refused to allow him to accompany them & insisted he stay at home while they went.
Later he went into town to ask what they had found & what they thought .......... "nothing to see hear mate ..... move along". When he asked for his video back they had "lost" it. He got a bit cranky & insisted on them finding it then. They asked him to come back in a week so they could try to locate it. When he went back they returned the tape BUT it was the wrong tape (a different brand). So they had given him a copy & kept the original.
That part of the story I know to be true 'cos I know the guy.
There were also unconfirmed repots that a DEPI helicopter had landed in the paddock the afternoon after his report.
Someone has a secret. yikes
Rob.

So True Hotrob.... Very hush-hush.... I worked at a DPI facility in Sydney installing Air-con in a new Building Extension and in the Building was a room with a Strong Door, simular to a Vault door... I asked what would be stored in there and was told 'Things not for Public Eyes' ..... When we were doing an Air Balance at the end of the job they Wouldn't let us in that room... My boss said that for the System to be Right, we needed access... 2 days later we were allowed in, Escorted by 'Security'.... There were boxes with 'Paw Prints', 'Scat's' and other things written on them... When I asked what the? a fellow said they are 'the unknown"......

They know... And Some of us know too... What is Reported is only a fraction of What is seen out there... wink

I've also herd story's of big cats in the Strathbogie's off an older bloke in his 80s he sounded like he was telling the truth when he told me he had found half of a sheep in a fork of a tree about 2 meters off the ground close to farmland. so im a bit half and half I believe it but then I don't until I see something like that.

there was another story of it on a farm apparently leaping 5 meters off a large rock to bring down a cow which they found skid/foot marks in the mud but they couldn't work out how it got so close to the cow without the cow seeing it and running off no foot prints leading into the bush or near it except for 2 skid marks where it landed there was a large rock nearby that it jumped off they found only half of the cow they never found the rest of it. one of the farmers even brought a large trap/cage like a croc cage to try and catch it but they never did they did however catch a large dingo/ferrel dog with 2 large front teeth. not like any types of dogs you see today.

oh and to throw one more thing into the works Strathbogie bush is huge and thick very hard to track down a big cat if it exists up there not only that but from Strathbogie to the far east and north of Victoria is all thick bush with not much open paddocks so there's heaps of room for them to move around from place to place and kill/eat whatever they fancy. also what's there to say there is no big cats I've seen deer's before and some are huge as big or bigger than cows running threw the bush had a girl deer honk at me on a dirt road lol sounded like an emu and cow in one so there's stuff out there.

Coming home from a trip up the Murray in Tocumwal about 4yrs ago
near Mt Macedon my Mrs seen what she said looked like a Puma walking down
a hill it was late afternoon and still light. I also have a mate that said he seen one about 10m away from
him when he was a kid. I believe them both.
