There is a gazillion 1c & 2c from 1966. The mint used up leftover copper from the pre decimal era !

It's an old town site, it is still inhabited, near the hills. Have a look on Google maps or ask a local.

My mistake there. Your right it is more down my way. The place I meant to say was Napperby near Port Pirie.

Found a Commonwealth of Australia half penny today, 1938. :Y:
it has quiet good detail but needs a good clean up, what's people's methods for cleaning these coppers.

I hav'nt tried them on silvers yet mate, and the coin really needs to have good potential in the first instance to be able to look any good (copper coins that is)
,not sure how yours will turn out in this instance, but there is certainly value in learning for us all in every circumstance we share. Gets to my fingers after a while, so it's not something I feel like persuing everyday. :Y: but that's just my small motor muscles not being used to it.

Interesting to see KGVI on a commonwealth coin. I think it only happens for 1938 & 39.

I have spent the past 3 weeks in Port Pirie and done plenty of small hunts here and there in my spare time.
Probrably got out at least a dozen different occasions for a quick swing, and while the finds are certainly nothing to right home about thought i would share them anyway.
I never went out targeting spendables so they were all by catch, what i really wanted was the pre decimals but they still seem to be hiding pretty well from me.
All up i got $14.75 in moderns to add to the tally


I would have thought from the 1 & 2 cent coins i was in the right areas but only managed 3 pre decials and only coppers. Is that ratio normal?
Any one in Pirie that wants to have a swing at some stage?
Anyway had a ball looking for them and will keep trying

Had a good arvos detecting today, not only the first silver for the Ace 300 but also a first medallion

1950 penny was only a coupple of metres from the 1947 florin with BB's all around, theres more pre decimals here to be found 8)

Here's the progress on the florin
So far would be about 24hs in lemon juice with the occasional scrub with a toothbrush

Got out for a quick hunt at a new site today
2 pre decimals and a ring in 40 mins so was pretty happy.


Half penny is 1921 and could read it straight from the ground
The penny was fully encrusted and i cleaned it (very very crudely ) untill i could see the date.

I wonder whether it was painted to pass off as a more valuable silver coin. Had a few pass through the forum over the years, including one from me.
