Hi all,

I'm bored at work so I thought I would design a coin tumbler. I will get the bits laser cut today and piece it together early next week. I could have bought a cheapo one on eBay for like $70, but where's the fun in that???

Just one question, I do not know what RPM is ideal for it. I have a choice of 15, 30, 60 RPM. I am leaning towards 30 RPM. The drum is 200mm dia. x 200mm wide.

I will upload pics as the project progresses. The only thing that will hold me up is the motor delivery, otherwise it would be running next week.

Will the rpm be adjustable,I.e. on a rotary switch?

It won't be adjustable with the cheap motor I plan on buying. I can add a voltage regulator but I'll lose torque. Its a gearbox motor so I need to change out the $23 motor with a different gear ratio if it spins too fast

Here is the laser cut bits. I would be welding it up tonight except I am going prospecting all weekend.

Hi 1968f have you considered using a 12 v drill as a motor. Might work. Variable speed. Cheers. thumbsup

Yeah I did but that was going to cost more as I didn't have one. If I get the speed wrong, I'll replace the motor with a slower speed.

Fabulous work again mate! Geeze I hate feeling ignorant! But what's a coin tumbler?
DC car engine starters have good grunt. And it is possible to vary the rpm.
Jay car make a variable DC voltage switch, 0% to 100%. 8amp max. About $35.
electric boat motors originaly used starter motors hey.

Hard to judge the scale, can you give some idea of dimensions, it looks very heavy duty. thumbsup

The drum is 200mm diamater and 200mm long. It's a lot heavier than I thought it would be

Finally received these in the mail so I'll be back into it on Monday arvo. Hopefully the diagrams on ebay are accurate and the bolt holes line up!!!

All finished. It works but is not powerful enough. It can basically tumble $50 of coins at a go and I want to tumble about $250 at once. So I will hunt for a much more powerful motor!

I have installed a wiper motor and it works great. I am rumbling $250 of coins now. Added garden stones and water/detergent. So far so good...

Not sure but I thought ( wrongly) that tumbling took days not minutes.

Nah not with coins - using steel shot it's recommended to check them every 15-20mins & the ones I've done wouldn't need much more than that (30mins) if any longer.
Doing stones etc. is a different matter. Can take several weeks & various stages thru coarse to fine grit media + polishing to get the desired end result.

With a wiper motor, have you got the intermittent speeds etc still??? wink

Haha no Intermittent but I have a voltage adjuster to get the right speed.

I ran with stones for 2.5 hours. I was only aiming to get them clean enough to cash in and not bring up super shiny. Goldies came up real nice though.

As it was the first run I was checking every 30 mins as I did not want to destroy the coins

While I think that the construction and design effort is great, as I collect coins I don't like to treat any of my finds in this way. The device may be more suited for tumbling/polishing stones and the like in the gem area.

I am only tumbling spendable coins prior to cashing in to an auto bank coin machine. A lot of coins I find are basically unusable as they are so dirty or corroded.

I would never tumble any pre-deccie or collectible coin.
