Hi all, i was just wondering how much i would be looking at to get a stone valued or even just looked at and identified by someone? Also, how much does it cost, on average, to get a stone cut locally rather then overseas once it gets over say the 6ct mark?

Hi Jessiy,

You can get valuations done by a Gemologist at a jewelers, I'm not sure of the going rate. If your just looking to get a stone identified I'd take it to your local lapidary club.

I am getting a few stones cut at the moment and I am looking a $45-$100 per stone these are really really good stones that we have collected over the past 12 months. Price will vary depending on the cut, time taken, quality of the stone and finished weight and is something you should talk about with your gem cutter once they have had a chance to assess your stones, they should also tell you if your better off sending it overseas.

Cheers

Thanks col,

Yeah the local club has a meeting on the 20th this month that i will be going to and taking some stones along for a bit of brain picking. I dont have a cutter, but i am quite paranoid with being able to trust people, especially after the jeweler i spoke to in kiama thought i would buy that a flawless natural australian good coloured blue, cut REALLY well, would pay at most 100 a ct.................. I left pretty fast. Any suggestions of good cutters are welcomed!

good questions

how do you trust them and who ?

Colin & Lee , i recall you writing that you send some stones to Thighland ( Thailand for those who didnt meet any )

whats the situation with the trust factor there ?

have you been there , do they show video of before , during and after cutting results or ... ?

No dramas with the trust factor guy's I have sent a few parcels to Thailand, as have a number of forum members with no dramas at all. You get to know your stones and I can tell that the stones I get back are the ones I sent.

For your really really good stones especially those that will be over a carat when finished it's worth getting them cut here in Oz

Lambert Industries are the company in Thailand and they are regularly here in Oz at gem shows etc.

I did do a bit of a before and after blurb on the forum when they came back

I have a few really nice stones with Scott Langford of Langford Gems based out of Adelaide and I'll be putting up a blurb once he has finished working his magic ;)
