Hi Joe , I believe the PREHNITE quarry in Prospect closed in 2010 & a warehouse is there now :(

Thanks Headbut, these are from the archive at least 50 years old - will take Prehnite off unless we can dig a tunnel

I think I just found my holiday spots for the next 50years.. Great info.

Cheers for posting that up joe! Absolutely fantastic list.

I was wondering if Lightning Ridge would be listed with Agate & Topaz, and sure enough there we are. They're only small here, but there are some very nice ones about. Some of my better Agates came from the large white Quartz gravel quarries out at Cumborah. We often used to go out there in the 80's for a fossick as a group with friends after the rains (when they were still working pits). Most of those gravels were used to build up the Cumborah/Grawin road and around the early 90's were covered over with bitumen. I haven't been to those pits for many years, but they may still be accessible.

My best find here was a nice sized lump of Onxy that came from a friends driveway -of all places- back in 89. I was never able to locate the gravel pit that it originally came from as there are quite a few possibilities scattered around the ridges (nearly all gravel pits around town are still accessible today though).

Don't think I've ever learned as much as I have before, as far as mineral locations go, just by reading these great threads.
You'd probably need a couple of lifetimes to visit them all!

I can post photos of my Agate finds here if needed joe.
Cheers,
Shauno.

Certainly can do just that Paul :)

While I haven't been very serious into the Agate and semi-precious stone collecting for many years I still have a quick fossick when I'm out and about in the old gravel pits.

1385003056_topaz.jpg

This is the only thing I've ever found here that is a good chance of being Topaz. This little one (about half an inch in height) has a strange light refraction around the edges and we suspect it is more likely to be Topaz than the run of the mill Quartz. All the similar looking water-worn Quartz I've found here is very clear right through. Apparently they did find quite a bit of small water-worn Topaz pieces out at Cumborah over the years. This one came from the pits just out of town that I use as a testbed for the GPX and coils :)

1385003596_agates.jpg

You could safely say that this would be pretty standard fare as far as Agates, Chalcedony, Quartz Crystal and Onyx varieties go out here. There have been one or two real beauties show up now and again. These are mostly in the half inch/inch range in size, with the odd larger piece amongst them. I have gathered several large containers full over time. They probably need the Ironstone Conglomerate gently chipped off and a good tumble polish or slicing done on the more impressive ones.

1385003943_onyx.jpg

So far this is the piece I'm most proud of finding. This is a pretty good sized lump of Onyx that's around two inches in diametre. I found this while searching a friends freshly graveled driveway here in 1989 while doing job weeks with the Cub Scouts if I recall correctly. We believe the gravel spread around the town came in from the Cumborah pits at that time. I recall being pretty dumbfounded as I pulled it out of the ground, even as a kid. 8)

It does show that there are some other goodies that may appeal to the inner rock hound around the place if you look carefully.
Kindest regards,
Shauno.

Hi Joe,

Very good information thanks,
I was just wondering if anyone knows where I can find ROCK CRYSTAL in Kangaroo Flat as in the list above.
We have been to Bird reef lane but it is restricted crown land and I think that means we are not allowed to fossick or gold detect in there.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wow, precious and common opal in my home town. That,s exciting. Also turquoise not far down the road. Thank you for posting this Joe. Excited!!

many moons ago when travelling around Australia on a working holiday we pulled up in a QLD caravan park for a few days when we met an elderly couple who were on their return trip to Sydney from Julia Creek, each year they would travel to Julia Creek chasing gems, mostly agates. We were sitting around a park bench slurping down a few froths while swapping stories when the ol' fella pulled out a rock, it had a white crust on the outside and was probably 6" in diameter. He had knocked off a small corner when finding it to confirm what it was.

Anyway, it was nighttime when he showed us this rock, he had a torch with him. When you pointed the torch into the rock from the corner he had knocked off, the rock completely soaked up all the torch's light and the rock appeared to be bottomless... it was quite impressive. I can't remember what he said the rock was, but he was over the moon about it.

Anyone have an idea of what it may have been?

Thanks AL
