The externally blowing SE trade winds finally died down and we decided we wanted to leave 'The Rock' as Thursday Island is known and make a crossing to the mainland. Finally we could break out and touch the mainland, real terra firmma. Wahoo.
The crossing was pretty uneventful as we had chosen a slack current time to leave. Currents can move at about 12 Kph as the Coral and Arafura seas empty into each other with the tide differences between the two seas. This can make the crossing very rough.
Camp site at Roonga point, opposite Possession island, was pretty average compared to what is available off the mainland but we didn't care - we had made it to the mainland. By boat. We had broken out if only for a few hours before making the return journey.
The camp site at Roonga point.
TI is about another 17K's over the horizon.
The fast currents are evident in the back ground.
