Hi everyone,
I know absolutely nothing about prospecting and taking this up as a hobby. interested in gold etc but especially old coins. I retire next year and I am looking for something that is interesting and give me something to do. My husband and I also go camping and thinking that I am be able to do some fossiking while away on trips. We do go mainly to state forests and I dont think there is any gold etc in the areas around Barringtops Glouster area though and that is where we mainly go.
The main info I am looking is what metal detector should I be looking at for coins, jewelry and gold. any info would be great and also does anyone know a dealer where I could buy a second hand detector in the Newcastle/Central coast/Maitland area.

Great to be here and looking forward to next year

Thanks

Welcome aboard tazzii !
Plenty of detection info on here in the different sections ,... but someone will set you straight in a few different directions shortly I'm sure. :)

Welcome Tazzi.

There are many members in the Newcastle, Lower Hunter area. Detectors for gold are different technology than those for coins. Camping and detecting/fossicking go hand in hand. :D In NSW you need a permit to detect/fossick in state forrests. You can get a permit online..... http://www.forestrycorporation.com....fossickers-to-discover-more-nsw-state-forests

There certainly is some old gold mines in the Barrington tops area.

Which detector to buy is a BIG question with Budget being a big factor. Goanna at Greta are about the only local detector shop around the area. https://www.goannagolddetectors.com.au/

The Anaconda camping stores sell the lower end Minelab range of detectors, as do some of the other camping type stores... BCF etc.

Second hand detectors don't really come up that often but keep an eye on the forum's For sale section. https://www.prospectingaustralia.com/forum/viewforum.php?id=10

Best of luck to you. It is a fun and rewarding hobby.

Welcome to the forum tazzil its a grate hobby and there are a lot of forum members in your area so enjoy and looking foward to your updates

Hi mate,

I'm In Newcastle this week if you would like to swing a machine or 2.
I think the deus may suit your ALL Round style f detecting that you would like to do.

It is in the higher bracket for price and performance but you won't buy another general machine after this one.
It is also the lightest detector on the market and 100% wireless.

Let me know if you would like a test swing this week.

Cheers mate have a great day
