Just a thought - if you might intend selling them in the future or even donating them to the local museum maybe not cleaning them could be best, keeping the centuries old toning is always desirable as a collector as you would know :)

As I said just a thought :Y:

P.S. again fantastic collection

Had some beautiful weather today for a detect, hence off to discover some more new sites to explore. First site we couldn't find, the second was an old sawmill with a supposed residence nearby. Turned out that the old house site was actually right next to the sawmill, and I only found the sawmill thanks to some large cement foundations hidden in the scrub.

Didn't find many coins (1926, 1943 pennies), though the relics were plentiful, including 1892 & 1893 SA dog tags and a pair of sweet buckles, one of which still has its full gold gilding. Four sets of "Paris Solide" brace buckles were unearthed, along with the usual compliment of buttons, buckles and fob watch parts.

Should be able to pull some more good finds from this site yet with some more detailed detecting. ;)

Thanks guys, found a bit more information on the buckles. Actually spotted more writing under the clasp - Fradelle & Marshall, Photo, London. Fradelle and Marshall were portrait photographers and minature painters based in Westminster, and their business only ran between 1872- 1876 before splitting up. I reckon these buckles used to house miniature paintings in the centre of the claps, long gone now though must be pretty rare considering they were only in business for a short time. Can't find any info on these, so am guessing they were commissioned works.

The King of relic hunting strikes again

Yes very very cool buckles and more dog tags

You never disappoint :Y:

Thanks :)

Back for another shot at the same site today, did pretty good on the coins for a change with a couple of silvers and some half decent commy pennies, plus another 1894-95 SA Dog tag. Scouting around the site we located what looks to be a bottle dump in a sinkhole, unfortunately most were broken or possibly a lot deeper down. We did manage to salvage a Brylcream bottle and a small non-descript brown glass container, plus a decorative belt piece held together with links was found nearby.

Also found a really nice large button from Paris Solide with some birds pictured on the face, the brace buckle next to the button is also from the same maker. :)

It is really quite an exhausting form of detecting, you spend most of your day climbing over fallen trees and branches trying to get coil to ground in the gaps, definitely a spot that dictates use of a small coil. The 2c and $2 were found on the track next to the site, you tend to get lots of guys out four wheel driving through the muddy tracks this time of year, plus no doubt others have visited the same site in the past.

The silvers were a surprise, usually they are the first targets cherry picked from these local sites, though the ground cover does make it challenging to find them. :)

Shocking weather for a detect today, though even with warnings out for a severe winter storm, we were still determined to hit the ground for a few hours before all hell finally broke loose.

The chosen site was where I found two early KGIII coins previously, the mid 1800's site is quite target poor, so you have to do plenty of leg work to locate anything of worth. My best targets of the day were the S.W. Silver of London buckle with wreath surround, and the early Firmin & Sons South Australian Police tunic button. Mrs Goldpick was lucky enough to find an 1885-86 SA dog tag, plus we found a few other buttons and musket balls between us.

Not sure what the large brass item is in the top right of the pic, thinking it might be part of some boot spurs??? :)
