Minelab GPX4800 tips, settings, questions

hi all hope everyone had a nice long weekend again
quick question about the gpx 4800.why are they so cheap now.i was looking round today and found miners den selling them off at under 5k now.
are they a good buy at that price or the 4500 still be a better buy
it will be my 1st outlay as at this stage im still not sure about outlaying for the 5000.
I can get a 4500 over the west here for round $4200 with the standard gear and already know will be buying extra coils for the west oz gold fields.
for a extra $700 can get the 4800 all new and full warranty.
any thoughts will be most welcome to help with my decision to buy

A good side by side comparison 5000 v 4800 v 4500.
My opinion 4500 or a 5000. It doesn't appear that the 4800 was an upgrade from the 4500 - missing things like boost & smooth timings. Don't really know what it's purpose was but would opt for a used 4500 before it, even if on sale.

Not sure if I still agree with my thoughts above though? The warranty would be a good idea & the 4800 is based on the same electronics as a 5000 so should be slightly smoother than the 4500. The 4500 though is an excellent machine in the right hands & I've seen operators out do 5000 operators on the same ground. If you can get one from a dealer with warranty would be my choice although most issued are easily rectified by Minelab relatively cheaply & quick.

i have been going through the topics and have seen very little on the gpx 4800. As Im new to the site am I missing something.

You would think a 4800 is half way between a 4500 and 5000 but it does not have all the program or features that a 4500 has ,I think they were made for the over seas markets manly for treasure hunting regards john :Y: ps a 45 is a better detector

I have a 4800 at the time of getting it the new 4500 wasn't out and there was no talk of a new 4500 I done a lot of looking and asking trying to get a second hand 4500.
They were pretty hard to find and when one did come up they were around the $4,500 mark and pretty old.

I had looked at the 4800 and we all know the story of what went on during production they skipped to the 5000 and the 4800 was pushed to overseas market as a relic machine.

But the 4800 new was $4,500 I added everything up spoke with mine lab got as much info on it.

Ground balance identical to the 5000 the old 4500 was noisy.

Trade off no fine gold timing RX goes to 15 not 20

As a starting machine for the price perfect I have found plenty of gold with it. When my husband got the GPZ he said I could have his 5000 I wouldn't part with my 4800 nor have I wanted to try the 5000

Short reply the 4800 was pushed to over seas market as a relic machine just didn't take off in Australia.

Hi there I'm wanting to locate gold nuggets on my property. Wondering if a used gpx 4800 is a good choice and what it's worth. I'm thinking $700 as I will also need to buy noise cancelling headphones and it's a discontinued model so getting it fixed may be hard? Thanks in advance for your advice.

$700 !!!...... realistically around $3000 mark for a good used unit.

Thanks. The unit I'm looking at has a 17 x 11" advantage mono elliptical and which is 1m waterproof but not standard. No headphones. Thoughts?

I think you may have to stick at least a couple of thousand & more on that price Lynda. They are as good as a GPX 5000 (which is still being manufactured by Minelab), and from memory there are only one or two timings difference. They are still being repaired by Minelab too, and probably will be for some years yet.

I would have thought that you'd get more than that mate.

You should get 3000 for it if you're patient and it has some extras but then its less well known, Who knows really?

4500s are going for more and they are an earlier model. They're not massively popular as the 5000 was released shortly after with a finer gold setting I think?

Selling the 4800 a bit short .... should expect/demand about the same price as a used 4500/5000

Pic shows best 21.6 grams (to date with 4800/14" Elite), video is latest with the 4800 and 11" Elite, 3.76 grams.

a buddy uses a 4800 to great effect!
