A few weeks ago I won a threepence that Silver put up for grabs in a competition. Not only did he send the thrippy but he sent a florin and a sixpence as well.I have finally got around to cleaning the florin and am very happy with the result. So I bought some citric acid, which is available at the supermarket and dissolved about half a teaspoon in the bottom of a coke bottle.Placed the florin in the solution and soaked for a couple of minutes and then gave it a light brush with a kids art brush.

That florin looks awesome mate....I had a couple of silvers that had some black crud that the citric acid would not budge...I Let them soak for 3 days....And it would not come off.....So i tried lemon juice....Now i know it should be the same thing...But after 24hrs soaking in the lemon juice...The black crud just wiped of with my thumb........ :Y: :D

I like to see experimental technique Smokey, whether negative or positive results, they all add to the learning experience ! 8) excellent result, will have to see if we can independently verify your results now ! :p ;) :rainbow:

Lemon juice mate..i just used the yellow bottle from woolworths...24hrs and they just wiped clean with the thumb :Y:

I might try it without the 3 day/and with the 3 day soak on two different coins then. 8) :)

First ones i did for 12hrs and they wiped clean......The crusty ones i left for 24hrs...but 12hrs would of been enough for those to...Then wipe with bicarb to neutralise the acid :Y:

Well Eldorado, since we are talking about cleaning coins and Smokey brang up the Lemon Juice(LJ) on this thread, thought I'd post the duplicate experiment here if you don't mind at all.
two coins for CAB 3 days followed by 12 hours LJ
one being 92.5% silver 1908 3d
1487324737_20170217_190942.jpg

the other being 50% silver 1946 6d

.
and two coins for just 12 hours in LJ
one being 92.5% silver 1926 3d

the other being 50% silver 1957 6d

So, I put them all in at around 7.30 pm tonight.
CAB is in the red ramekins.
1487325567_20170217_192542.jpg

and the LJ is in the white ramekins.

I'll be able to check the plain LJ ones in the morning.
I've only photographed the one side of the coins to make the photography easier for myself. ;)
we shall see how it goes repeating your experiment Smokey on both types of silvers. :D

Just had a little peek into the ramekins.
CAB.

Looking like the LJ is taking effect in that last ramekin at least, and some colouring appearing in the second ramekin too ,... so, they are both 50% silvers (the 6d's) that are reacting already. :D

Righto, this morning slightly after 7:30am and going onto 8.

took out the LJ's and gave them their thumb rubs
photos of rubbed but not washed coins
92.5% silver in LJ 12 hrs, slightly cleaner, went straight back into the LJ for a further 12 hrs to see how that goes.

1487370484_20170218_080840.jpg

50% silver coin in LJ for 12 hrs, thumb rubbed but not rinsed, looking very promising.
1487370764_20170218_080908.jpg

given a press in dry bicarb (not a rub) to neutralize the LJ, then washed off, then washed with my usual detergent and rinsed (twice).

All praise to you Smokey, cause there's a nice silver now, where before it was still in my wait to learn technique basket ,.... kicked off a whole new ball game my friend ! ;) :D

Great test there Silver....nicely presented...Though the coins i did 1922....1926 came out of the LJ Slightly tarnished...and needed a rub with the bicarb and thumb to remove the tarinish.....But they were pretty crusty :Y:

I used ceramic bowls Smokey ;) things like that and product brand could make all the difference, even a three day soak in CAB first could be the difference, we'll wait and see ! :Y:
.

Here's the before and after on that 1957 6d for a visual comparative analysis.
