Hi there,
So many amazing finds in the forum. My boys have become fossil crazy and am wondering if there are any good locations near Sydney to find fossils, coral, petrified wood that you can recommend for day trips?
Thanks
Ren

I know there are spots in Sydney where you can find them but not sure of the legalities as they are mostly in national parks I think. The type of rock you will be looking for though is in the "Narrbeen Shale" type I think, not 100% sure though.

Try rock walls like the below when the tides gone out, you can often find fossil clams etc:

I have found fossilised sea snails at Wollongong Lighthouse and at Kiama beach.

Apparently there is an abundance of petrified wood at Mt Ousley, Wollongong. I would be keen to get some too so let me know if you want to come down and I will hit up my source for exact directions.

There are plenty of fossils to be seen at Ulladulla, and a nice museum display.

You can download an interesting presentation with lots of pics and descriptions of the fossils here:

The same siltstones can be found at the rock platform at Berrara beach, a little to the north, and that location is a better bet to collect a few fossils than Ulladulla.

Thanks for the info mate - I am gonna go down when it cools down a bit
