what is the difference between a good sapphire and a fine one, and i have heard talk about red, green, blue spinel, would these just be bomb sapphires, and does anyone know where i can get a cheap but also efficient faceting machine, thanks

Clarity and colour make the difference, though Star Sapphires are usually opaque due to the amount of Rutile they contain. The Orientation of the Rutile needles within the stone creates the Star effect when they are cut.
Spinel is Softer and has a different Crystal habit, Bomb Sapphires are Opaque or non Gem Quality

Cheers
