What is this?

I found this today on a walk. Don't know what it is but its about the size of a fist and weighs about half a kg. There is a gold coloured ore and some quartz.

Crush and pan!

looks like quartz with slate + pyrite + ironstone/oxidized pyrite to me

I would crush it up in a dolly pot then pan it as tom said. you could find quite a lot of fine gold in it

Looks like quartz and ironstone and pyrites to me. Probably beem throught a few burnoffs. Very common looking stuff around ballarat enfield hepburn area. Crush and pan as has been said above. We dont just pan for gold we pan to see the other minerals present that may indicate gold

yer but for just the average prospector sometimes just crushing it up will tell you if you want to go back and dig up more or its not worth your time or effort if your not getting anymore than say 2 specks of gold for every 4 to 6 kg of quartz crushed it is worth it if you can cyanide treat it and leach it with mercury but handing those chemical's are highly risky and dangerous and I wouldn't do it if I was just the average hobbyist
