Hi I've never fossicked for gemstones but would like to have a go. Is it done with a pan like gold panning if so how do you separate the particles in the pan?

There are different methods but most gem hunters would most likely use sieves. I haven't done it either but would like to in the right area. Have found some various gem like stones that I am not sure of while panning though.
Also see Wal & Liz on the forum - they use their highbanker set up which looks good to.
 
I may need to get more info, maybe go with someone and pick up few tips.
