G'day mates,

searching for "fossickers licence tourist" didn't give me a good result, so that's why i'm asking.

As a tourist with a long term visa (about 1 year) i'ld like to search for gold with a metal detector (hiring possible?) or a gold pan.
But i don't want to be limited to the designated "tourist-areas".
So i'm wondering if it's possible to get the "nomal" licence for locals?

cheers
Heiner

Hi Heiner,

As far as I know there isn't a Tourist license available only a normal one so just look up the state you are interested in travelling to and go to their department of mines website for details. Nugget has put up all the links for each state in one of the forum posts.

Hope you have a great time visiting Australia.

Cheers,

Grant

Hi Grant,

thx. for the information.
So i'll act as an true blue :).

Now it's time to find out where to hire equipment for a week or so in different states.

Cheers,
Heiner

Here is the information for Victoria. You will need a Miners Right, which costs AUS$ 31.30 for a year. These can be bought on-line at http://www.energyandresources.vic.gov.au/earth-resources/recreational-prospecting-and-fossicking

Victorian Miners Right - Frequently Asked Questions: http://www.energyandresources.vic.g...requently-asked-questions-about-miners-rights

Victorian Prospectors Guide - http://www.energyandresources.vic.g...-prospecting-and-fossicking/prospecting-guide

Have a look though this whole 'earth resources' site.It has map and reports that may be of use to you.

You must by law carry your Miners Right at all times while prospecting. If you do a course or training day, you should be covered by a Tourism Miners Right which the business should hold at no cost to you.

There are numerous businesses that do tours, training and hire detectors in Victoria

Here are a few

http://www.goldprospectingaustralia.com/
http://www.goldandrelics.com.au/tours/
http://www.bendigogold.com.au/gold-prospecting-tours/
http://www.coiltek.com.au/

You can keep/sell any gold you find in Victoria as your Miners Right covers you legally to retain gold. You can take what you want but there is a mandatory reporting schedule over $10,000 in cash. YOU WILL NOT BE TAXED.
