Found this in the Cockburn River today whilst gold panning, it is very small maybe half a millimetre across. Was in the bottom of the pan with the gold and ironstone. Still has a very good crystalline structure and the colour in the pan really struck me.

Immediately though it might be a Ruby.

Anyone have any idea?

Hey Ben, pretty sure it's a Garnet, there is a Garnet/Zircon deposit about 5km from there near Limbri. If you have a UV light put it under that , should fluoresce quite bright hot pink if it's a Ruby.

Thanks guys.

Heatho, do you know any more about the garnet/zircon deposit near Limbri?

Was the only info that popped up on the Google Earth overlay I'm using.

There is a parcel of crown land on the creek right where those co-ords are. I'll go do some recon tomorrow.
