The GIS mapping available for Tasmania at the list tas.gov site is simply amazing.

http://maps.thelist.tas.gov.au/listmap/app/list/map

it has everything, I don't know if the other states have this but they should.

Base maps as topographic, scanned maps, aerial layers from every department including titles, licenses, use, geology, plant communities it goes on and on.

Various tools for generating areas guestimates, pin pointing on aerial photos is a favourite of mine,

Hi Muttering,
Yes, it's an awesome resource, combining satellite, aerial photo, scans of the 1:25k maps and new topo maps. The ability to overlay several layers simultaneously, such as current tenements and land tenure, and individually dial in their opacity is amazing.
I use it all the time for work and play. Much improved on the old version.

For those who haven't already found it, the fairly-new MRTmap now contains mineral occurrences (alluvial and hard-rock), current tenements, and 1:25,000 / 1:250000 geological maps: http://www.mrt.tas.gov.au/mrt_maps/app/list/map

I've taken the information in the Mineral Resources overlay and created a Google Earth .kmz file that can be downloaded. The link is half-way down a post I published a couple of months ago about the northeastern Tasmanian goldfields: http://www.appleisleprospector.com/tasmanian-goldfields-north-east/
