after recent camps i have now sworn by the old fashion gas light!
They are the ultimate weapon against bugs, moths, flying ants etc.
500deg of bug zapper!
"FLY TO TH E LIGHT"
ZAP!
Burnt and hit the ground!
Ring of dead bugs around it in the morning.
We got hit with a plague of flying ants for an hour one night recently!
Millions of the buggers!
They would hit the hot gas light a singe instantly.
So much so that when the top of the gas light was full of dead bugs... it would catch a light in flames, 5 minutes later... same thing!
Woke up the next morning to see a massive culling!
LED only..... and you would of been in trouble!
Crawling all over any type of light.
Even your phone lit would of drove you insane!
GAS BBQ BUGS!
Best ever! :perfect:

Even better get an electric bug zapper so you don't have to worry about the gas light falling over and spraying ignited fluid everywhere.

The bugs love me so I know the satisfaction of hearing those bities fry ?

I'm taking the 80's lpg gas mantle type light.
No fluid?
Not a hurricane light.
Any electric bug zapper would of tripped the fuse in this situation!
They are crap these days !
Unless you buy a commercial grade zapper
20 000 v .
If they don't create argon when being Zapped.... its a toy!
And where are you getting the power from to run a decent Zapper..?
The recent ( last 20 years) are absolutel crap compared to what was available 30 years ago as standard.

This is what MH is talking about.
Thousands of flying ants thought it was a good idea to crash our camp
The result was carnage. Hundreds frying themselves on the hot gas light
It was very entertaining

I do prefer the led's for the convenience. Flick a switch and you have light, no extra gas bottle to carry, no extra mantles, no spare glass lens.

And you can get coloured, non attracting leds with a remote control

Stopping bugs :( you're out in the Australian bush for crying out loud

Got me buggered :playful: the mongrels come from everywhere no matter what light you use. Xcvator is right you can buy LED'S with white and yellow in the one unit, just fitted one to the van haven't had a chance to try it yet. I have no doubt bugs will still be attracted to it but not in the same volume as a white light. There's no one answer fix all it comes down to what you're happy with

Beleive me, i love my LEDS!
Inside the back of the 4B, big one, 2 up front, big one for the awning, one in gazebo......
I cook on a gas 3 burner, so the gas light is no extra hassle.
And I generally keep it dim .
I'm still blowing flying ants in my gear!
Try camping at harvest time close by.
When the headers are going 24-7.
You will get 10s of millions midgees that are evicted and will fly straight to any light .
You will have to sit in dark, to scared to light a cigarette
A friend had their stereo on, windows down... the illumination of the stereo....
Next day 500 where in behind the dash screen!
Depends where and when you camp.
Often woken up , finding a thick ring of dead bugs around the gas bottle.
One night a big frog got half way up the post and was having a buffet of bugs!
One hour later he had enough to eat, and they where sitting on his back!
Can't you tie a not excavator

Take a good look at the wall of the tent.....! Covered in them!
This was an insane swarm ,
Got in your ears, rum and coke and your top pocket.
Often the first night at a location will bring them out, then the next night its like you've culled that area and hardly get 10% of the first night.
Dog chewed one black snake I and one other close by camp.
I'm OK with the snakes, they don't get all chewy in your rum !

Fixed it for ya

And just a tad difficult in plastic coated stainless wire

Ha!
I think both lights have a good place around the camp.
So I use both.
My tinny i decked out with aldi LEDS.
We all know im sure, some mono filament fishing line, especially light line, is a bugga to focus on at night.
But these LED'S offered a different colours .
I think it was green that made the fishing line easy to tie with.
:perfect:
And they had a dimmer switch.
Always welcome to the challenge of camping next to 100 000 acres of wheat being harvested and lighting up your LEDS only Escavator!
They will drive you insane!
I'm betting you will Turn off the LEDS or flea camp!
Almost harvest time......

I had to replace 2 of the el cheapo reading lights in my caravan, so I did all 4. The new ones are similar in operation to the main lights in the roof of which there are 3. One above the bed, one above the lounge and one in the ensuite.

They are all double switched in that they are bright white LED, with the second switch position being what they call a subdued blue night light. Not a problem in the cooler weather either is ok as I don't get insect problems. But with a little warmer temps and insects around, the Blue night light function attracts insects worse that the white light.
Similar to the bug zappers, I know.

I have a LED strip light (canvas encased) with a dimmer and a duel colour LED, white and yellow. The yellow light works great when insects are around and let's face it, an LPG light inside a van aint a great idea, lol.

I'm yet to find a reading type light with the white/yellow combination.

Perhaps I worded the tittle wrongly... my bad.
I love my LEDS.
But there are advantages of the old gas lights.
Lighting up your camp like the MCG might draw some unwanted attention but!

But if that's your style, move the lighting away from your set up.
Get them attracted out of your camp area.
Even my gas light I try to keep away from the gas cooker, and just bought an extended hose.
Dead bugs on bacon..... hmmm

I like my Gas lights too but I always put them 3 or 4m away from where I am or the bugs will drive you nuts,

One of the major advantages of using a Gas light is in the Colder months not only do they provide light but they also provide heat, In the Summer time that's not such a good thing, Where as LED's would be the better way to go,

Also Bugs are not such a big problem when it is windy, :Y:

Where did you get those ridge Runner? I can't tell the size of them from the pic. Also, how do you use them if you bought a box, do you just spread them around your camp?

Mudge, I like the old gas light too but don't use them much anymore. The thing that got me in the end were the mantles breaking. Probably user error. Got to admit, also tying up the old twin ties was a pain, the ones that had a tie on the top and bottom. Thankfully most of them are only single tie.

Also, I like the sound of the gas lights
