This will be hard to find but an excellent machine.

Good luck

I don't think they were out that long before Minelab brought out the 5000 were they? The only one I've noticed spoken about on here was when Wilko conducted his tests on the new NF 25" DDX coil when it came out

They were not out long before the 5000 was out. But really if you were just after relics and coins the equinox with discrimination would be a better and cheaper or a CTX new will be cheaper.
The 4800 is a very old machine and you could spend $3k plus and a CTX new is about $2.5k.

Just my opinion. Save some money.

Why do people always refer to the 4800 as a "relic" machine ....... I use mine for GOLD and can assure you it knows how to find it.
The only RELICS I've found are the bits of rust, nails, buttons, foil, etc etc etc the the 4500 & 5000 are also good at finding.
This ain't no relic ......

It's because it was the first GPX with the coin/relic timing.
Other than that there's little difference between it & a 4500. The 4500 does have Sensitive Smooth & Audio Boost.
The 5000 has Salt Gold, Fine Gold & Audio Boost over the 4800.

Basically the GPX4800 is a Gold Detector that was superseded quickly by the 5000 so was then aimed at relic/hoard hunters (more in Europe etc.) & will still find gold as capably as others in the GPX range.

I don't think the 5000 "superseded" the 4800 - they share the same brochure:

and the same Instruction Manual:

The 4800 offered a smaller feature set at a somewhat lower price than the 5000, but most Aussie buyers opted for the 5000:

If I recall correctly, these two were introduced only about 18 months after the previous 'top of the line' GPX4500, so plenty of early adopters of that model felt hard done by when it was superseded so quickly. In an era of online forums, they weren't slow to let the world know how they felt about Minelab's marketing. :awful: :bomb:

Superseded might not have been the best wording but there were a couple of theories on the release of the 4800/5000.
One was the 4800 was originally going to be the upgrade from the 4500 but was delayed. In the meantime Fine Gold & Salt Gold timings were finalised so the 5000 was born (superseding it) but there were still a stock of 4800's needing to be sold.
The other is it was always meant to be released like that with the 4800 always to be an alternate model mainly aimed at relic/hoard hunters.
With the price difference being only $600, the 4500 still available then subsequently re-released until last year & the 4800 being released in 2010 then discontinued in 2012 I tend to believe the first one.
A lot of dealers here wouldn't have even bothered stocking the 4800.
The best sales of it here would have been the discontinued stock/run out sales when it was sold at a reduced price.

Wonder if Richard ever did sell this one?

Was only asking for a mate. Already have a 5000 4500 and a nox. Thought maybe if he could get one, could get it a bit cheaper then the 45 an 5000s. If I knew what I know now about them I would have bought a 4800 when minelab were selling them cheap.
