Ive just finished cutting and polishing this great little boulder opal piece. Its about 2.7ct and it wasnt until it had dried out and I photographed it that I noticed this little hairline crack.
Does it need to be recut to make it crack free or is the stone safe in its current state?

Needs to be re cut unfortunately it could crack even more as it continues to completely dry. If it was me id be trying to cut a 3 set piece, 2 x earing studs and a pendant piece with the larger bit. You could clear coat the top with a 2k resin of sorts and keep it how it is, will still see the crack but should keep it together.

Righto. Thanks Pinfire. I suspected as much but it breaks my heart to cut it up. Just needed a second opinion. Ive now realised that I have to let the rubs dry out properly before polishing to avoid this kind of disappointment.
