I've never taken the road that far down but it was open for the first 10 kms or so when I went for a detect out that way a month ago. Yes, there are gates but they are not locked. I assume you could drive it all the way down, it's a dirt road which might have been a haul road a long time ago, now it's not looked after very well anymore.
