A hunting club I am in has a cottage where we stay for weekends..it's not a remote area by any means and the forest we hunt is crossed with a few country roads and is heavily used by the locals...
In one spot a just few minutes walk from the cottage we have a tower high seat on the edge of some thick woodland looking over a replant...I have used the seat dozens of times as have countless others in the club over the years....one day one of the guys gets out of the seat, and pushes into the thick woodland at the rear..he only goes a few yards in and finds the remains of a body, head detached, with a rope and noose still tied in the tree above him... The police investigation found deceased had travelled to the area from quite a distance away and had been missing for a couple of years...it seems all the times we had been using the seat, the poor bugger had been hanging, and then later lying there about 50 feet away...
Another time we had a visit from the police asking us to look out for two missing children that had been abducted from their home not too far away...the bodies of the two little girls were eventually found in the forest by a dog walker about 5 miles away, :8 hidden in a shallow grave...
In a completely different area, I once found a couple of sites that were being used by local witches to do what ever ceremonies they do in the woods...I gave that area a wide birth after that!.lol
I thought we were trying to scare the crap out of you ,but now you have turned the tables on us

I take the Crocodile Dundee approach when out alone in the bush. If you are out in an isolated area, you can see anyone coming ,except the time i had my headphones on while detecting and a cross country runner ran straight past me before i knew he was there !!!!!!!!!!!!! Scared the living daylights out of me.

When my ex used to ask if I wasn't scared when I went lamping in some of the more remote mountain areas around lambing time, I would ask why, as I am the one out after dark with a rifle!

Re travelling around Oz, my ex has a cousin doing just that...She worked over there and eventually married a local...when they reached their mid/ late forties, they sold up everything, bought a 4x4 and caravan and set off travelling all over Australia...They "house sit" for people with empty properties, with each job lasting from a few weeks to a few months with lots of travel in between...

I think if you're going to an area you haven't been to before, it would advisable to do some research before you head off especially if it is in a remote location. Call the local pub or caravan park etc.. see if you can get the heads up about where you're going & if there some things or someones you need to be aware of. Many years ago a mate & I headed into an area called Palmerville Station Ie: Palmer River area, a couple of hours away from where we live.
Long story short we were heading to the homestead to ask for permission to camp & metal detect on that station. We got within 500m of the house when we were greeted with by a man & his dog with a rifle pointed directly at my head through the windscreen. fortunately, we were able to leave without losing our heads.
After a few days detecting on the neighbouring station, we headed back out & stopped in at the Palmer roadhouse for a couple of brews. The Publican told us we were lucky he didn't shoot first and ask questions later. Moral of the story is if we had asked the locals first for advice we would never have been that situation to start with!

Mines department now apparently will only go into the region with an armed escort????!!!!
How flupped up is that????
Perhaps no shots fired over the river now... but the R16 isn't a free for all..

As Simmo said, "Check out Dave Wrights books". They are "Blood Gold Revenge" and "Bush Redemption". I have read both, with the first one based loosely on the facts I believe, but I think that the second one may have been more fictional. Dave had first-hand knowledge of the situation and used it as the basis for his books and they were available as E-books at one time.
Dave was a regular contributor on the "yellow forum" for quite a long time with a couple of mates and has posted this year, so he is still around.

Depends where you go. Theres some real strange characters out bush. Im always prepared for anything. With the current gold price youd wanna keep an eye on your camp too.
my eldest daughter always worries her heart out whenever I go bush ... prospecting, camping, or just touring.
She says "Dad, people get thrown down mineshafts out there"
I reply "its ok girl, I promise not to throw anyone down a mineshaft .... .... if they aren't a threat to me or attack me"

Sure is a wild place at times, my father in law & his mining partners were in there to buy a lease back in the 70's & were ambushed by a group who had found out they had cash on them for buying the lease. They lost one bloke from their group along with a truck & only just made it back out to the main road after a long and dangerous chase through the scrub. They headed back into Mareeba to get assistance from the police & you know what the cops said to them.... sorry fellas your on your own with that one. At that time under no circumstances were the police going into that area period, fortunately their old mate managed to get out some how and was spotted by a helicopter which they paid for to look for him. Used to be a crazy at Tarnagulla. His name was Sarge and he lived in one of the old churches there with another guy. The one, church, on the hill of the Poverty Reef line. Odd, as Sarge was a nut but the other guy was really a nice person. Guess the other guy was just desperate for a place to live as he was a bit of a down and outer.
Sarge though, was known to the Police. In central Vic years prior was a murder and what was believed to be a cannibalism where the person killed was eaten. Was in the news, look it up. Us who knew him, not as friends I can guarantee, believe he did kill and eat him, so did the Cops. But nobody could prove it. Sarge used to drive around in an old Land cruiser with doll heads and headless dolls tied to the grill and bull bar. Was a seriously sick individual. Well, one day guess what happened not long after his mate said he was worried!? The church burnt down. Guess who died in the fire? His house mate.
Weeks later as Sarge was still living outside the church a guy goes into the Tarna pub. He had been staying camped in the bush for a few months detecting. (I know the publican well) He was all shaken and went to say goodbye to the publican John before he left. This is what he said. "I was asleep in my tent and woke up with that mad bloke Sarge leaning over me in his army coat. He had a knife at my throat and said, It's ok IT just told me to let you go"
The guy who I saw a few times but the Publican knew was never seen again. Was the last I heard of Sarge too.
Scary man. I do really believe he killed and ate the guy, he was utterly insane.
