Hi Forum.

I'm a newby here. And not a prospector.

My grandfather passed away a few years ago. Rumour has it he buried one of his valuable rifles.

I was informed that possibly a minelab gpx might be able to detect this.

I would guess it might be in a poly drainpipe or wrapped in grease

Possibly buried up to a meter in a dry hard compacted red soil.

Any recommendations??

Brgds

Hi Graham,

Thanks for the reply.

What I'm seeking is information, I'm fully aware of any so called legalities.

My understanding is that it is a registerable firearm.

So I am still seeking info on using a detector to recover it?

A GPX4500 or 5000 with a very large coil (20 inch or more), should find the rifle, but a GPZ7000 with its standard 14" coil would have a very good chance too and might be easier to hire and use. There are some specialised, dual coil, pipe/buried treasure detecting machines available (very scarce in Australia), but either of the Minelabs will prove more useful in the typically mineralised red soil mentioned.

Key to success would be operating very slowly and thoroughly, as coverage and signal strength diminish with depth, but a large, steel target with smooth surfaces should be very findable, especially if it's buried flat rather than on end. If it was lowered down a very deep post hole, the target presented to the detector will be much smaller.

Some states will let you keep it but you must apply for a heirloom permit, this will allow you to keep 1 firearm that has sentimental value. or 2 maximum only if a matching pair..... like 2 cased antique pistols. i think if it was me i would look into this and not dig it up just yet. contact your local dealer or firearms expert. :(

edited ?, sorry jaros i didn't mean to bag the police, i was just going by my own experience, can you take the " not the police " out too please, it makes my post look like im being shifty :argh:

Thanks for the helpful info gents.

I have a firearms dealer friend who is assisting. As stated would possibly leave it insitu until a firearms amnesty.

Cheers for the help.

If you are in a suburban area a detector such as the gpx or gpz would struggle with emi
If it is in a rural area and not close to powerlines or buried cables it might be ok, otherwise a coin/relic detector may be your only option.

If you got a firearms licence and the rifle is not deemed illegal just tell them you found it in grandads shead .
You will then be able to register and put on your licence.
Well you can in qld.

Many detectors could find it depending on depth. I lent my At Pro to a mate for the same reason. He had buried a rifle in poly pipe and couldn't remember the exact spot. He found it with my detector.

Good luck.

I don't own any firearms at all....
But I can always fire one supplied by the armed forces if they need me to any time.
The thrill of the dig and retrieval in your case would be pretty well worth it... even if it never really happened (buried again after a look see)
