A few 1850s + gold field finds

The ground still has some moisture in it from recent rains and the finds keep coming from this area.

Silvers 6d - 1826, 1844; shilling - 1816; half crown - 1846.
Coppers 1/2d - 1864, 1861. 1d- 1868.
Tokens are Iredale, Holloway and Smithfield.

The buckles were interesting and generally in better condition than many I've found. The Chinese one is a different theme from the others I've found.

I found 3 police buttons in different locations in one paddock which may be indicative of an encampment. In another photo there are two decorative chains with different attachments, including a snake. I suspect these were attached to the epaulettes of police uniforms. They were found separately.

The other finds are fairly stock standard, a few Chinese coins, buttons of various ages etc. The baby jaw's harp is there along with two oval medallions which I can not clean up and distinguish any further. I have found similar in the past with Chinese writing so I suspect they were good luck charms. There is also a religious broach.

You can see why there were so many thimbles around back then, with all those buttons popping off that needed replacing! :)

A great site and terrific assortment of finds! Don't think I've seen 8 Chinese coins found at one site before!

So many bucket listers amongst those finds for many of us, got to love goldfields history. We do like surprises, keep them coming. :Y:

Hi Jim

Not quite. It is still eluding me. The possible police paddock was a half surprise (two gold commissioners (both public and private) lived nearby). Next search will likely be next week in a totally different area.
 
Woah I think I mentally skipped over looking at the pictures last time I opened this thread. Good job! I'd give my left nut to dig those silvers...

Thanks - that seems painful. With the relics and other finds you're picking up I guess it's only time.
 
Good finds. There were lots of thimbles in the goldfields, as a normal sized one held about 1 ounce of fine gold. There's lots of broken Chinese coins as they were broken into halves or quarters as change. I never knew that until last year when a coin hunter told me.I used to throw the broken pieces away!
