We are hoping to get to the gem fields early next week. Never been there before or done any fossicking, so looking for some help please. Where to stay,( cp) who to talk to,who not to talk to.
Are there any PA members there that might be inclined to help us.

Mr Vator

Just about finished here in Rockhampton and will be in the Gemfields thurs next week..

when you get to sapphire go past the Blue Gem caravan park/shop/petrol, on your left is a freecamp just behind the swimming pool. stop in and give your self some time to look around, google has the local c/van parks marked. we will head to Anakie c/van park, no reason though, we been there before,
Camping on the fossicking fields is permitted, there is an official charge for this, fossicking licences are available online and at the Blue Gem c/van park as well.

Hi XCVATOR been to the willows area twice done all right there,i dig in the augies gully section, did not get to the other side of the gully last time to wet, but done all right up the top, most of the sapphire wash at the top of augies is no deeper than 2 foot, find that white ash layer and you can find the goodies just above and in it,the ash layer can be up to a foot deep, when you hit the clay layer that is where it bottom's out.You can call into the mines department at emerald and grab a booklet on the gem fields(central queensland gemfilds fossicking maps) has mud maps of the gem fields, no camping at the willows but there is 2 caravan parks there, i stay at the gem air village ph 0749855124 good friendly people :D They have club at the willows township, there is no take aways, they have hamburgers sat night & fish and chips sunday night, meet the locals and visitors they all make you welcome :) :pickshovel:

yes Mr 69 apparently recent rain helped with specing, current rain is a hinderence, it jist makes mud stick to the boots. One of the regulars here at Anakie qld, was out and about before this current rain and found a green he reckons will cut 8ct, this gent has been coming here for 25 years and now in his late 80's still has sharp eyes for the colour
