Hi bob, there is a lot of experts on this forum ,so I will put my two bobs worth in.i would suggest ringing around the wreckers in Sydney, not far from you? And try to buy a secondhand engine from a vehicle that has had a smash ,but was in good condition with no more than 200 ks. You can usually pick a car that has seen regular maintanence ,looked after and was obviously driving good until the prang.Any engine with the kms you have will really need a full rebuild which you really have to weigh up cost / vehicle replacement/ the real fault to cause the problem. I agree that no 2 piston has indeed picked up on the bore ( scuff marks) and that is usually overheating ,which could have been a long time ago,and I have seen cracked pistons just from age. Ps I have been a motor mechanic for 43 years and still run my own shop,Regards to you

Took the Patrol for its first big run into Bathurst this morning after the rebuild. Kept it under 100kph on the way in and under 150 on the way back. The temp gauge hardly moved going up Box Ridge both ways. Im very happy with the results so far.

Coming back I was loaded with 6 kegs and supplies for the pub and the Patrol performed better than ever going up the hills

I still have a few minor things to do like replace the thermostat and radiator cap with a 1.1kpa cap

Cost for the rebuild is just over $1000 at the moment. :p :p

If you got pulled up by the Cops on the way Back, at least you had an excuse....' The Pub Has Run out of Beer Officer' .....

LW....

I have just finished taking the Patrol on a run across the county from Hill End, NSW to Leonora, WA some 3600km,

It never missed a beat. The temp only rose once above the normal position for some reason.

Fuel economy was good. Until I work it out fully it appears to be around 17L / 100 km towing the camper

The only issue that I noticed was that the turbo is not working but that is something that I swill look into latter once I get back to Hill End

Overall, Im very happy with the rebuild that I did back in March. :p

Noticed my 9" spotties and winch weren't working the other day. Due to my back probs I was going to take it to an auto elec. but decided to have a little look myself.
There it was! the 2 wires that power the units were hanging low in the engine bay. You see I had a battery replaced recently and the BLOODY TWIT had left them off.
Quality service these days!!! :(

Had a similar experience, auto elec swapped over some bits n pieces from the old Pathy to the Challenger, hoped in the Pathy to head out and nothing, open the bonnet, quick check, battery still disconnected! :argh:

Yep , some/most auto elects are not much good.

fmy ranger has a leak somewhere (the trailer lights flicker), and one has looked at it twice , first time he said nothing was wrong, plugged in the trailer, had another go, couldn't find it.

I'm so glad my taxes subsidised his apprenticeship!

Bob, it might be worth-while investing in some oil analysis for a couple of oil changes, to ensure you get early warning of any further undiagnosed issues. Good luck with it all, and the rest of your trip.

a bit harsh :N:

Good to hear you went the cheap route on getting it running again. If the crank and bores measure in spec you are just throwing money away doing anymore. Well done.

How many Ks since the last fuel pump and injectors had a rebuild? It looked like a lean condition. The Hitachi turbo in these are waaay too small for 4,200ccs. They create alot of heat in these motors. Best to run a decent size intercooler. Run a pyrometer.

Better yet while your in WA drop in and see the TD specialists UFI. They produce their own turbos based off thee popular Mitsubishi turbo for the TDI. Increased performance, economy and longevity.

Most importantly, run a decent intercooler.

The 11mm pumps on these can be adjusted for a little extra but make sure you are running a good intercooler as everyone should.

Al.

I installed new injectors with the rebuild, The fuel pump will get done when I get back to the East Coast
Its running a DTI Turbo. Again I will look into rectifying this when I get back home as it has not affected the running of the engine or fuel use on the trip over
