Hi all. I was just cruising around the web and found a photo of an 1838 Groat....4 Pence.

Question: Has anyone here in Australia ever found one, given that before 1910 it seems our monitary system seemed to encompass a number of different coins from a number of different countries?

Just interested, so that maybe I can add the coin to my bucket list. TIA.
 
Yes 1836 at Sandstone WA in very good condition, Worse thing is it started me collecting them.
I'll look for it and post a photo.

Wait until you find a silver 2 pence 1838 they look great. So small and similar to the threepence.

And not to be confused with the Maundy fourpence which is different again.
 
Groats - have seen at least 1 pop out in the Goldfields

On other Detecting info. platforms about 20 I know of have been shown

There was 1 just this week found in Tasmania ..!

The Farthing was one of my bucket list items, managed to find an 1840 Farthing in 2017 whilst detecting a recently cultivated fire break. AS for the Groats, they seem to be more common on the goldfields more than anywhere else.

The reason why groats are found on the goldfields are they are only from goldrush times and were discontinued in the late 1850's because the traders in Great Britain didn't like the size as it was the same as the threepence. The same with the silver twopence (half Groat) it was considered to small and easily lost.
