Goldpick's 2019 XP Deus finds

Lastly a venture out into the cold and fog to liberate some spendables (and the odd predec), it was so foggy I nearly had to pull over for a while - was a good opportunity to shove some Maccas down the gob whilst things cleared. For something different I took my bargain basement brand new $150 9" LF coil for a run, and came away pretty impressed with it working in the modern junk - see here: https://www.prospectingaustralia.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=436300#p436300

Did pretty good in the end, 39 coins all up including the token silver for the evening, a 1943 thrip, and the standout for the coppers was an English 1936 Brittania penny
(only 154,296,000 made! layful

I did find an older Anzac pin, unfortunately in wasn't in the best shape, also the "Faith" pendant did prove to be .925 silver (in photo).

Your hunt on the 1st June and the Victoria Safe Company key escutcheon is a ripper, refurbished many a Vic Safe as a young bloke. I'll have a chat to a few people and see what info I can find on it if you like. It's been a few decades since I played with them each day. I've got about 1/2 doz (various brands) here that need some tlc and then they'll go to new homes my problem is lack of time. The upside is they'll still do the job in another 50 years :Y:

Thanks RM, it very much surprised me to see that come out of the hole, also good that the keyhole cover freed up and still works as it should.

At least I now know escutcheon is the proper term for it, any extra info is always appreciated. :Y:

Same here, not all households were flush with money, and the relics really tell the story behind the conditions they lived under, and the lives they led. I only learnt recently that the bath house property owner tracked down a relative living nearby, and there were two sons that lived on the property who both served abroad in the military. That explains the military buttons, Anzac pins and Rising Suns found there - I offered to repatriate some of those finds to the relative if he wishes to do so.

Here's a few photos of a Victoria Safe Co double door unit, manufactured pre Arc Welding and Monolithic construction, each panel was hand riveted in this construct.


Some safes had multiple locks as seen here so there might be more to find at your site. It might have come from a single door unit with only one lock anyhow when you get back there it's worth a look.

Here's an internal view of the safe. I had to open and make keys to one of these a few years ago, no plates or escutcheons on it at the time unfortunately, was a dual lock unit, fantastic craftsmanship erfect:

Approximate year of manufacture is 1930.

Finally have permission to have a detect over an old racecourse tomorrow, whilst it has seen other detectorists in the past, there is always hope that others haven't been so thorough (as I have found on plenty of other sites down here). The racecourse also has an old oval adjacent to it, so plenty of ground to cover - just hope the weather holds out. :argh:

As promised Mrs Goldpick and I headed out to check out the racecourse, not knowing whether the location had been cleaned out or still holding a few good targets. Turned out to be a glorious day with no tall grass to contend with, so we decided to test the outer sections of the main spectator area rather than go headlong into an area that may have seen many other detectorists. Was a good decision in the end, plenty of silvers and very little junk vs the main area which held plenty of junk and very few coins.

After complaining about not finding any coins, I pointed out a target for the missus to dig up (commie half pennny), then she went off to dig up a damned 1910 shilling along the fenceline - talking about luck! We ended up taking the large Mars coil off her Racer 2 and went back to the stock 11" coil, I reckon she had a bit of trouble pinpointing with the larger Mars coil.

The two piece SA Boy Scout button was a cool find, apparently it predates federation and was made by A.J. Parkes (rear of button missing).

The latter half of the day I had some young bulls follow me around, one got close enough to lick the Deus coil, then they lost interest and proceed to slobber all over my SUV a few 100 metres away (and remove the rear mud flap in the process).

Despite the locality not brimming with coins, I think we did pretty well for the day - quite a relaxing day if anything.
